First, we need a plan. In creative writing, the ones that make a plan to write are called map writers. Writing maps work for all kinds of writing, so let’s make our map.

Make A Plan

When I got this, I started a light research process about what people needed to know about the topic; this would help me write the outline. The way I outline is by writing the headlines of my article, you can delete them later to make your article more fluid.

I researched every section, took notes, and copied the links of my sources. This whole process took two hours for 20 different articles; I have to say that I was writing about topics that I know, so research wasn’t so hard.

"Disregard the Words": How to describe innovation

On a psychological level, we lie in part to paint a better picture of ourselves. We connect our fantasies to the person we wish we were.
Our conscious mind only controls about 5% of our cognitive function. The other 95% is beyond our awareness. While our brain is dreaming about who we wish we were, it's letting signals slip by.

Studies suggest lying about a personal topic takes hard work. It results in a different language pattern. Linguistic text analysis identifies four common patterns in the subconscious language of deception:<ol><li>Liars refer less to themselves when they are untruthful.  They talk more about others often using the third person to distance themselves from the lie.</li><li>Liars tend to be more negative because they feel guilty about lying on a subconscious level.</li><li>Liars typically explain events in simple terms as the mind struggle to build a complex lie.</li><li>Liars insert irrelevant but factual sounding details.</li></ol>

The language of lying — Noah Zandan

A paragraph is a unit of writing, longer than sentences but shorter than chapters or entire works. Paragraphs connect the small ideas of individual sentences into a bigger idea.

Paragraph meaning

Paragraphs follow a standard three-part structure with a beginning, middle, and end. These parts are:<ul><li>The topic sentence introduces the main idea the paragraph is about.</li><li>Development and support. Development sentences explain the idea in more detail, while support sentences provide evidence, opinions, or other statements to confirm the paragraph's main idea.</li><li>The conclusion wraps up the idea, sometimes summarising or transitioning to the next paragraph.</li></ul>

Paragraph structure

Most paragraphs contain three to five sentences. The number of sentences in a paragraph is based on the style of the writer. Some authors prefer long, descriptive paragraphs, while others prefer short, fast-paced paragraphs.

How many sentences in a paragraph

<ul><li>Expository paragraphs revolve around explaining and discussing one point or idea.</li><li>Persuasive paragraphs focus on discussing one point but support opinions instead of facts.</li><li>Narrative paragraphs explain an action or event. Each sentence provides new information.</li><li>Descriptive paragraphs focus on describing one topic. Each sentence adds new detail to the topic.</li></ul>

Types of paragraphs 

<ul><li>Ideally, you’ll already have an outline for whatever you’re writing. If not , decide on the paragraph topic and which facts to include.</li><li>Keep all related paragraphs together and in a logical sequence.</li><li>Set out the parts of your paragraph: topic sentence, development and support, and conclusion.</li></ul>

How to plan a paragraph

Your paragraph introduction should be the topic sentence unless you're doing narrative writing. Say only what's necessary. Save the details for the following sentences.

How to start a paragraph

For your reader's convenience, connect the sentences so the reader can move from one point to the next without getting confused.  Some paragraph sentences will run together on their own but others need transition sentences to help the flow. Use transition words like however, therefore, or similarly.

How to transition within a paragraph

If the paragraph looks too long after you’ve said everything, consider breaking it up into separate topics and paragraphs. The best way to end a paragraph is to summarise the topic with all the new information from the support sentences. However, you don't need to restate the topic. It's also reasonable to end a sentence stating one more piece of support.

How to Write Strong Paragraphs

Many individuals experience social anxiety, but a 2020 study showed that younger people are more affected by it. <ul><li>Symptoms show up in different ways, such as an intense fear of interacting or talking to strangers, being judged by others, humiliating yourself, or catastrophising.</li><li>Other common signs are blushing, sweating, trembling, feeling lightheaded or nauseous, or forgetting what to say.</li></ul> While the root causes and symptoms may vary, there are tools that can help you to make your networking event feel more approachable.

Social anxiety at a networking event

Visualise what will happen the night before. Your brain will think you've done it before and help to ease feelings of anxiety. <ul><li>Close your eyes and go through the entire process: Imagine yourself waking up in the morning, picking out what to wear, eating breakfast and driving to the place. Imagine how it would feel to enter the room.</li><li>Now imagine potential interactions: approaching someone standing alone and saying hello, grabbing a coffee and making a friendly comment to a peer. Imaging your warmth and enthusiasm supersede your anxiety.</li></ul>

Visualize how things will unfold

Create prompts for what you’d like to discuss or share at the networking event, including questions you’d feel comfortable asking. This can help reduce your anxiety quite a bit because you already know what you will say. Stand in front of a mirror and practice saying your script aloud. Pay attention to what you look like.

Write a script in advance

A lack of vitamin D or magnesium tend to make you feel more anxious. Eating vitamin D and magnesium-rich foods a few days in advance can be helpful to buffer the stress. Grab some fortified milk, yogurt, and Brazil nuts before an event. They contain selenium which helps manage anxiety, depression, and tiredness. Ensure to eat before networking to prevent showing up with a growling stomach. Also avoid sampling cuisine you've never had before, incase it doesn't agree with you.

Fuel up properly

When you enter the room, remind yourself that you're more than your job title. You may feel less constricted around what to discuss. <ul><li>Talk about hobbies. “What would you be up to if you weren’t at this thing?”; “Did you figure out today’s Wordle?”</li><li>Be an advocate. When you’re feeling anxious, tell yourself that you’re not here for yourself. Try reframing the event. For example, you are here to make connections that benefit someone you know or to learn more about (x). When we help other people, it makes us feel empowered and more in control of the situation.</li></ul>

Step outside your role

Try to identify events that feel like they’d be less stressful for you. For example, events focused on a particular person or group remove you from the centre of attention. <ul><li>Be an audience member. If the thought of a ballroom of strangers is overwhelming, consider attending a lecture or panel discussion.</li><li>Find your people. It could mean standing on the periphery, where introverts are more likely to stand.</li><li>Embrace the 10-minute rule.  Tell yourself, ‘I’m going to talk to this person for 10 minutes.’</li></ul>

Lower the stakes

A lot of people experience social anxiety, but it disproportionately impacts young people. If this is something you struggle with personally, there are a few tools you can use to help ease your nerves in unfamiliar social situations, such as a networking event for work. Visualize how things will unfold beforehand. Our brains often don’t know the difference between imagination and reality. If you’ve already walked through the event in your mind, it will be easier to confront in real time. Write a script. Create prompts for what you’d like to discuss or share at the event, including questions you’d feel comfortable asking. Fuel up properly. Taking supplements or eating vitamin D and magnesium-rich foods several days in advance of an event can help to buffer the stress that your body feels. Lower the stakes. Consider attending a panel discussion or lecture — two examples of learning opportunities where you can watch rather than actively participate.

If Networking Makes You Anxious, Try This

<ul><li>The term “affect” refers to your ability to express emotions. </li><li>Beyond your facial expression, your affect also includes your hand gestures, body language, and even your tone of voice.</li><li>A flat affect refers to low or lack of an emotional expression when the situation may merit a more evident reaction. For example, smiling or laughing at a good joke.</li><li>A flat affect isn’t a condition on its own. It can be a symptom of a mental health condition, although this isn’t always the case.</li></ul>

While researchers don’t know the exact cause of a flat affect, it may be related to brain chemistry.More specifically, certain parts of your brain, like the sensorimotor system or the amygdala, may be underactive compared with people who don’t have a flat affect.While a flat affect is most commonly associated with symptoms of schizophrenia, this isn’t the only explanation for it. Here are some other potential causes.

Causes of A Flat Affect

Certain medications, like antidepressants, can cause a flat affect.In a 2017 study that examined 3,243 user reviews of antidepressants from three health websites, 41% of reviews reported negative emotional and behavioral effects, including a flat affect.In this case, the reviewers were taking either:<ul><li>escitalopram (Lexapro)</li><li>duloxetine (Cymbalta)</li><li>vilazodone (Viibryd)</li><li>vortioxetine (Trintellix)</li></ul>

Antidepressant Medications

Research shows an overlap in symptoms between schizophrenia and autism. This may sometimes include a flat affect, which has confused experts for decades because the two conditions are very different.Some autistic people may have a hard time expressing emotions or responding to social interactions, which can present as a flat affect.For example, in a small 2019 study, researchers found that autistic people had more muted muscle movements in their faces when watching films designed to stimulate emotions than a control group.

Some forms of dementia can cause changes to the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain, which can sometimes manifest behaviorally as a flat affect.Although not always the rule, symptoms of dementia may include progressive aphasia (the inability to communicate) and a loss of facial expression, according to the National Institute on Aging.

As you may know, depression exists on a spectrum.In some cases, a flat affect may be present along with related symptoms, like anhedonia, or the inability to feel pleasure. This isn’t always the case, though.Flat affect can result from a decreased emotional response to events around you.

<ul><li>Facial paralysis, such as after a stroke or from other muscle disorders, can give someone the appearance of a flat affect.</li><li>People with Parkinson’s disease may experience hypomimia, more commonly known as a “masked face.” This refers to a progressive decline in facial expression, which can manifest as a flat affect.</li><li>A flat affect is considered a “negative” symptom of <a href="https://psychcentral.com/schizophrenia/schizophrenia-overview">schizophrenia</a>, which means there’s an absence of a certain emotion or behavior.</li></ul>

Muscle Disorders And Other Causes

People who live with schizoid personality disorder may sometimes have some symptoms that overlap with schizophrenia.According to the diagnostic criteria in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5), this includes avoiding social interactions and displaying emotional coldness, detachment, or a flat affect toward others.
