Simone de Beauvoir, born in 1908, was an influential writer, feminist, social theorist and philosopher. She is known for her 1949 book, The Second Sex, which changed the way society at large thinks about the role of women. A Paranoid Person’s Guide to Preparing for Digital Danger

The minutes to hours after a nuclear blast are a critical window. The potential for radiation exposure decreases 55% an hour after an explosion and 80% after 24 hours, according to the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security.Immediate actions during those first few hours, like covering your eyes or hunkering down in an indoor shelter, could mitigate your risk of death or serious injury. Here's how to protect yourself in a worst-case scenario.

The critical window

<ul><li>The best course of action is simply to avert your eyes. When a nuclear bomb strikes, it sets off a flash of light and a giant orange fireball. A 1-megaton bomb could temporarily blind people up to 13 miles away on a clear day and up to 53 miles away on a clear night. </li><li>Drop to the ground with your face down and your hands tucked under your body to protect from flying debris or sweltering heat that could burn your skin. If you have a scarf or handkerchief, cover your nose and mouth. But make sure to keep your mouth open, so your eardrums don't burst from the pressure.</li></ul>

First 30 minutes: Avert your eyes and shield your face 

<ul><li>Survivors of a nuclear attack would have about 15 minutes before sand-like radioactive particles, known as nuclear fallout, reached the ground.</li><li>People should look for shelter in the opposite direction of fallen buildings.</li><li>The best shelters are buildings like schools or offices with few to no windows and a basement for camping out. If there aren't sturdy buildings nearby, it's still better to be indoors than outside.</li><li>If you take cover in a multistory building, choose a central location and steer clear of the top and bottom floors. If the building has windows, stand in the center of a room. </li></ul>

First 45 minutes: Seek shelter indoors away from windows

The hours after a blast are critical for reducing radiation exposure.<ul><li>People who were outside during an explosion should shower as soon as possible, making sure the water is warm and soap is applied gently. Scrubbing too hard could break your skin, which acts as a natural protective barrier. You should also cover any cuts or abrasions while rinsing off. </li><li>Don't use conditioner, body lotion, or face cream after exposure to a nuclear blast, since these products can bind to radioactive particles and trap them in your skin and hair.</li><li>Blow your nose and wipe your ears and eyelids, since debris could get stu<warningtag>ck in these places. </warningtag></li></ul>

Don’t fall for the alluring trap of quick-fix (temporary or inadequate solution to a problem) life hacks. You need to learn how to harness talent, hard work, passion, and obsession to relentlessly pursue your goals. To do this well, you need to master your mind. Without mastery of your mind, you cannot unlock your full potential.

Forget The Quick-Fixes

Be the 1% of people willing to do what it takes. Be the warrior. The warrior trains, battles, and never backs down. If you want to achieve the unachievable, being a warrior is the only way.

Next time you’re inspired to do something, but feel that sense of self-doubt start kicking in, stop yourself and ask:“What if I did _____?” Fill in the blank with what you want to do.Then, think about this: What would a successful outcome look like? And finally, follow it up with action.

Can't Hurt Me

The iPhone 13 has been out for 6 months, is it still worth buying or is it better to wait for the upcoming iPhone 14?

iPhone 13 - 6 Months Later…

Battery life on the iPhone 13 has to be my favourite feature. I can get anywhere from 7-8 hours of screen-on time, a big step-up compared to the 4-6 hours on my iPhone X. This means the iPhone 13 can easily last a whole day and in days of lighter use can even last for two! Glad to report that battery life has been consistent over the past 6 months.

The iphone 13 brought some cool new camera features. Including cinematic mode and photographic styles. I use the camera everyday and while these new features are nice to have, I appreciate the camera quality upgrades the most. The wide angle lens is incredibly well stabilised, almost providing gimbal level of stability. It is also better in low light and the ultra-wide angle lens is noticeably sharper. This results in truly stunning photos and video!

The OLED display on the iPhone 13 is best in class. Text is rich in detail and colours are vibrant. Photos, videos, games all are a joy to see on this display! One display feature the iPhone 13 misses compared to the Pro model is 120hz, this faster refresh makes screen animation extra smooth. Nice to have but is by no means a must have. Compared to previous iPhones, the iPhone 13 has a smaller notch, a step in the right direction but I more look forward to the day the notch is removed. Overall, the display on the iPhone 13 is fantastic to use everyday!

The iPhone 13 starts at $799. To save $100, you may be considering the iPhone 12. But my advice is to not do this. The iPhone 13 provides far superior battery life, double the storage and improved cameras, smaller notch etc. All of this for $100 is a no brainer! But what about the more expensive iPhone 13 pro? The 13 Pro has even better cameras, including a telephoto lens, that 120hz display and even more premium build quality. However for $200 more, I can’t justify the price difference. For most, including myself, I would go for the regular iPhone 13, it is the better value option!

The Lineup

At the end of the day the iPhone 13 is a safe upgrade. Apple didn’t take any risks with revolutionary new features or design, instead upgraded the areas that matter most, camera, display and battery and this creates for a really good phone. Now, in March, we are at the mid-point between the iPhone 13’s release and the launch of the iPhone 14. Should you wait? You can always wait for the next model but my advice is if you need an upgrade the iPhone 13 is a solid phone that delivers in all the areas that matter most and will last or many years to come and the iPhone 14 won’t change that!

Today I will share my experience using the iPhone 13 as my main phone, everyday for the past 6 months. As well as taking a look at how the iPhone 13 compares to rest of the iPhone line up. The iPhone 13 features aluminium and glass construction that has help up very well. No scratches on the glass back. The frame has mostly held up well. Over the years iPhone screens have become more crack resistant but have also become prone to scratching, I have a screen protector on my screen and recommend you do too. I am happy with the durability of the iPhone 13. Use of high quality build materials create a phone that feels solid in the hand. The iPhone 13 didn’t launch with any revolutionary features. Instead made improvements in the three most important elements. Display, battery and camera. The OLED display is best in class. Brighter compared to iPhone 12. Colours are vibrant. Photos, videos, games all are a joy to see on this display! One display feature the iPhone 13 misses compared to the iPhone 13 Pro is 120hz. I have a 120hz display on my M1 Pro MacBook Pro, this faster refresh makes screen animation extra smooth. Nice to have but not a must have feature. Compared to previous iPhones, the iPhone 13 features a 20% smaller notch. The smaller notch doesn’t impact how I use my phone. Overall, the display on the iPhone 13 is a joy to use! This bring me to battery, my favourite feature of the iPhone 13. As a power user, I am on my phone a lot. With iPhone 13 I get 7-8 hrs of screen time. Over the past 6 months, battery performance has remained consistent, I still have 100% battery health remaining. Let’s talk cameras, the dual lens camera system is truly impressive. Photos are true to life. White balance is spot on. Colours are vibrant. Images are sharp and retain detail. Regardless of lighting skin tones are accurate. As for video, the wide lens uses sensor shift technology to provide almost gimbal level of stability. Dynamic range is excellent. I have even used 4K 60fps footage shot on my iPhone 13 in my YouTube videos. The iPhone 13 starts at $799. To save $100, you may be considering the iPhone 12, But my advice is not to buy the 12 instead of the 13. Comparing the two, the iPhone 13 provides far superior battery life, double the storage and improved cameras. All of this for $100 is a no brainer. But what about the iPhone 13 pro? The 13 Pro has even better cameras, including a telephoto lens, that 120hz display and even more premium build quality. But for $200 more, I can’t justify the price difference. For most, including myself, I would go for the regular iPhone 13, it is the better value option. The iPhone 13 is a solid phone that delivers in all the areas that matter most and will last or many years to come and the iPhone 14 won’t change that.

Casual observation tells us that most people don’t use math beyond simple arithmetic in everyday life. Few people make use of fractions, trigonometry, or multi-digit division algorithms they use in school. More advanced tools like algebra or calculus are even less likely to be brought out to solve everyday problems.

Evidence for the Failure to Use Math

I see three explanations for the failure to use math in everyday life:1. Most people don’t learn math well enough to use it effortlessly.2. We learn school math but fail to translate real problems into a format where we can apply our math knowledge.3. Most higher math isn’t useful for everyday problems.

Why Do People Fail to Use Math

There seem to be a few options:1. More drill and practice with math. More time spent drilling and practicing math makes it more available for effortless calculations.2. More practice with interpreting problem situations. We need to give students more training in noticing and converting everyday situations into the math problems they know how to solve.3. Give real-life challenges that require math. Ultimately, skills and knowledge are sustained by usage. If you don’t have any genuine problems that require a skill, you begin to forget it.

<ul><li>Focused mode is used to concentrate on something that’s already tightly connected in your mind because you are familiar and comfortable with the underlying concepts.</li><li>The diffuse approach involves a big-picture perspective. Useful when you are learning and understanding something new. As long as we are consciously focusing on a problem, we are blocking the diffuse mode. Do something else until your brain is consciously free of any thought of the problem.</li></ul>You need to use both big-picture, or focused mode and detail-oriented, or diffuse thinking to get good at math and science.

Focused thinking needs meaningful stretches of undisturbed time to focus and think.<ul><li>Prioritize making distraction-free time and space to think deeply</li><li>(SQ3R: Survey, Question, Read, Recall, Review)</li><li>Practice purposefully (Work the hardest bits, generalize through variation)</li><li>Think on paper, there’s magic between the hand and the brain</li></ul>Diffuse thinking occurs subconsciously by temporarily loosening attention.<ul><li>Relax/disengage attention: Sleep, walk, drive, blink, exercise</li><li>Recall and test frequently (e.g., spaced repetition techniques).</li></ul>Actively build time into each day to alternate between both modes.

Create the best conditions for focused and diffuse thinking

One of the first steps towards gaining expertise in math and science is to create conceptual chunks.Once you chunk an idea or concept, you don’t need to remember all the little underlying details; you’ve got the main idea - the chunk - and that’s enough.Basic steps to forming a chunk:<ol><li>Focus your attention on the information you want to chunk. No television on in the background, don’t look at your phone, etc.</li><li>Understand the basic idea you are trying to chunk.</li><li>Gaining context so you see not just how, but also when to use this chunk.</li></ol>

Conceptual chunks

Unfortunately, many of us find it too easy to procrastinate even starting our math homework because we see it as boring and difficult. This thinking comes from focusing on the idea that we only want to finish our work. If we instead look at our goal as “For the next 15 minutes I’ll work on this math assignment,” it becomes a lot easier to just begin. When we center our mind on only the process of learning, it’s easier to just go with the flow and relax.

Focus on process instead of product

Interleaving means practicing by doing a mixture of different kinds of problems requiring different strategies.Overlearning means continuing to study or practice a problem immediately after some criterion has been achieved. For example, correctly solving a certain type of math problem and then immediately solving several more problems of the same kind.Overlearning provides diminishing returns.

Learning to use your memory in a more disciplined yet creative manner helps you learn to focus your attention.<ul><li>One of the best things you can do to remember and understand concepts in math and science is to create a metaphor or analogy for them.</li><li>Use spaced repetition to help lodge ideas in memory.</li><li>Create meaningful groups that simplify the material you are trying to remember.</li><li>If you are memorizing something commonly used, search online to see if someone has already come up with a particularly memorable memory trick.</li><li>Beware of mistaking a memory trick for actual knowledge.</li></ul>

There is a direct connection between your hand and your brain. The act of organizing and re-writing your notes is essential to breaking down large amounts of information into smaller digestible chunks.Writing and saying what you are trying to learn seems to enhance retention.

Articulating your question is 80 percent of the battle. By the time you’ve figured out what’s confusing, you’re likely to have answered the question yourself!

Learning is often paradoxical. The very thing we need in order to learn impedes our ability to learn. We need to focus intently to be able to solve problems – yet that focus can also block us from accessing the fresh approach we may need. Success is important, but critically, so if failure. Persistence is key – but misplaced persistence causes needless frustration.
