How do we learn to perform complex skills like programming, physics, or piloting a plane? What changes in our brain allow us to perform these skills? These are hard questions. Most experiments only attempt to address narrow slices of the problem.This is what makes John Anderson’s <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ACT-R">ACT-R theory </a>so ambitious.<a href="https://www.scotthyoung.com/blog/2022/02/15/act-r/?ck_subscriber_id=1425544151#easy-footnote-bottom-1-13883"> </a>It’s an attempt to synthesize a huge amount of work in psychology to form a broad picture of how we learn complicated skills.

This Is Where ACT-R Theory Comes In:

All scientific theories are built on <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradigm">paradigms</a> .A paradigm is an example that you take as central for describing a phenomenon. Newton had falling apples and orbiting planets. Obviously, Newton didn’t restrict his theory to tumbling fruit. Yet, these were the examples they used to lay the foundations for their broader theories.<ul><li><a href="https://www.scotthyoung.com/blog/2022/02/15/act-r/?ck_subscriber_id=1425544151#easy-footnote-bottom-2-13883"> </a> We can ignore their origins and simply focus on applying the theory.</li></ul>Theories of the mind aren’t like this. Nobody believes we’ve found some unified theory that fully explains how the mind works. Yet we know a lot more than nothing.

A Note on Scientific Paradigms

ACT-R argues that we have two different memory systems: declarative and procedural.<ul><li>The declarative system includes all your memories of events, facts, ideas and experiences. Everything you consciously experience is part of this system. </li></ul>The procedural system consists of everything you can do.

ACT-R explains complex skills as an ongoing interaction between these two systems.<ul><li> The declarative system represents the outside world, your inner thoughts and intentions. </li><li>The procedural system acts on those representations to make overt actions or internal adjustments that move you closer to your goals.</li></ul>

Complex Skills

Why two separate systems? A single system would be simpler. But there’s an impressive range of evidence arguing that these systems are distinct in the brain:<ul><li>Amnesiacs can learn through the procedural system, but not the declarative system .</li><li>Procedural memory is unidirectional . This is why saying the alphabet forward is so much easier than saying it backward. </li><li>Declarative memory shows <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fan_effect">fan effects </a> . </li><li>Neuroscientific studies suggest different locations for the two systems . </li></ul>

Why Two Systems? 

The basic unit of declarative memory is the chunk. This is a structure that binds approximately three pieces of information. The idea is that, through experience, we connect these chunks into elaborate networks. We can then traverse these networks to get information as we need it.

The Declarative System

The declarative memory structure is vast, but only a few chunks are active at any one time. This reflects the distinction between conscious awareness and memory. When we need to remember something, we search through the network. <ul><li>For practiced memories, this is relatively easy as most related ideas will only be a step or two away.</li><li> For new ideas, this is much harder since they’re less well integrated into our other knowledge and therefore require more effortful search processes</li></ul>

Awareness And Memory

How do nodes get activated? <ol><li>First, you perceive things from the outside world that automatically activate nodes in memory . </li><li>Second, you can rehearse things internally to maintain them in memory </li><li>Third, nodes can activate connected nodes. This is what happens when one thought leads to another. </li></ol>The declarative system, with its vast hidden network of long-term memory and briefly active nodes corresponding to our conscious awareness is impressive. But, according to ACT-R, it’s also inert. Something else must transform it into action. That’s where the procedural system comes in.

Activating The Nodes

The basic unit of the procedural system is the production. This is an IF -> THEN pattern. Think of productions like the atomic thinking steps involved in solving a problem. Unlike the sprawling, interlinked declarative memory, productions are modular. Each one acts as an isolated unit that is learned and strengthened independently. Solving complex problems involves more productions than simple puzzles, but the basic ingredients are the same.

The Procedural System

<ol><li>You form a representation of the problem in your declarative system . .</li><li>Productions compete with each other based on this current representation . </li><li>As each production is executed, it changes your present state . </li><li>The process repeats itself until the problem is solved .</li></ol>

How ACT-R Claims You Solve Problems

In the ACT-R theory, learning skills is thought to be a process of acquiring and strengthening productions.Initially, productions are learned via analogy. We search our long-term declarative memories for a similar problem. Then we try to match this to our current representation of the problem. When we have a match, we create a production.

How Do We Acquire Skills?

ACT-R argues that we don’t learn by explicit instruction, only by example. When we appear to learn via instruction, we first generate an example based on the instruction and then use this example to create a new production.Once created, productions are strengthened through use. Every time a production is used to solve a problem, it becomes more likely to be chosen again in similar circumstances. The strengthening process is incredibly slow.This is why it can take so much practice to be good at complicated skills.

Why Learning Complex Skills Take Time

There are a few general implications we can tease out:<ol><li>Most skills will be highly specific . A microscopic analysis of any two skills should, in principle, tell us how much transfer is possible.</li><li>Transfer should look smaller on tests of problem solving than on tests of future learning . To solve a problem you need all of the productions. </li><li>Practice makes perfect, but many types of practice can be wasteful . Anderson favors intelligent tutoring systems that immediately correct students when they make a mistake. </li><li>Complicated skills have simple learning mechanisms . </li></ol>

Wordle, a once-a-day “guess the word” game, has been one of the recent viral sensations on the internet. Josh Wardle, a Software Engineer, designed this game during the lockdown in October 2021 intended for him and his partner to play online, as a daily routine. By early Feb 2022, New York Times has purchased the game from Wardle for an undisclosed lower 7-figures sum.

You have to guess a five-letter word in six chances every day. After each guess, the color of the tiles will change to indicate the closeness of your guess. A correct letter in the correct spot will have a green tile. A correct letter in the wrong spot, will have a golden yellow tile. A wrong letter will have a grey tile.

Similar to Wordle, we have to live life within its simple framework, applying our common sense! In many cases, the brainstorming phase of an Art project has to be completed quickly, however, if you are a fast drawer and have a spare weekend, you might wish to produce a collection of drawings to illustrate your ideas. You might wish to include a range of different mediums. Before spending considerable time on this exercise, you should check with your art teacher whether this is appropriate for your project.

Draw lots of small pictures to illustrate ideas visually

Integrate a mind map with an ‘incomplete’ image that extends across the page. Many Art students find that drawing itself allows them to relax and thoughts to flow freely. You may wish to make a mind map in and around an observational drawing that sprawls across a page, in a fragmented, semi-complete way. As you think of possible ideas, these could be scrawled upon the drawing and extending out from this, creating an organic and spontaneous record of ideas. Strong observational drawers could find this an excellent way to flaunt skill to the examiner from the very first page of their sketchbook.

Integrate a mind map with an ‘incomplete’ image 

Collecting, ripping and arranging a range of images, textures and surfaces can provide a creative base upon which to write and draw further ideas. These pages from a visual journal explore ideas related to illustration, fairytales and mythology.

Maharshi Panini was a Sanskrit grammarian from Pushkalavati, Gandhara, in modern day Charsadda District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan (fl. 6th century BC).Panini is known for his Sanskrit grammar, particularly for his formulation of the 3,959 rules of Sanskrit morphology, syntax and semantics in the grammar known as Ashtadhyayi (अष्टाध्यायी Ashtadhyayi, meaning "eight chapters"), the foundational text of the grammatical branch of the Vedanga, the auxiliary scholarly disciplines of Vedic religion.

is one of the earliest known grammars of Sanskrit, although Pāṇini refers to previous texts like the Unadisutra, Dhatupatha, and Ganapatha. It is the earliest known work on descriptive linguistics, and together with the work of his immediate predecessors (Nirukta, Nighantu, Pratishakyas) stands at the beginning of the history of linguistics itself. His theory of morphological analysis was more advanced than any equivalent Western theory before the mid 20th century, and his analysis of noun compounds still forms the basis of modern linguistic theories of compounding,

which have borrowed Sanskrit terms such as bahuvrihi and dvandva.Panini's comprehensive and scientific theory of grammar is conventionally taken to mark the end of the period of Vedic Sanskrit, so by definition introducing Classical Sanskrit.

though it is generally agreed that he knew of a form of writing, based on references to words such as "script" and "scribe" in his Ashtadhyayi. These must have referred to Aramaic or early Kharosthi writing. It is believed by some that a work of such complexity would have been difficult to compile without written notes, though others have argued that he might have composed it with the help of a group of students whose memories served him as 'notepads' (as is typical in Vedic learning).

Writing first reappears in India in the form of the Brahmi script from c. the 3rd century BC in the Ashokan inscriptions.While Panini's work is purely grammatical and lexicographic, cultural and geographical inferences can be drawn from the vocabulary he uses in examples, and from his references to fellow grammarians, which show he was a northwestern person. New deities referred to in his work include Vasudeva (4.3.98). The concept of dharma is attested in his example sentence (4.4.41) dharmam carati "he observes the law" (cf. Taittiriya Upanishad 1.11).

Works

Nothing certain is known about Panini's personal life. According to later traditions, his mother's name was Daksi and his maternal uncle's name was Vyadi. Some scholars suggest that his brother's name was Pingala. Still less is known about his father, whose name may have been Paṇi, but most scholars reject this suggestion. More than a thousand years after the fact, the Panchatantra mentions that the Grammarian Panini was killed by a lion.

Life

The Ashtadhyayi is the central part of Panini's grammar, and by far the most complex. It is the earliest complete grammar of Classical Sanskrit, and in fact is of a brevity and completeness unmatched in any ancient grammar of any language. It takes material from the lexical lists (Dhatupatha, Ganapatha) as input and describes algorithms to be applied to them for the generation of well-formed words. It is highly systematised and technical. Inherent in its approach are the concepts of the phoneme, the morpheme and the root. His rules have a reputation for perfection -

that is, they are claimed to describe Sanskrit morphology fully, without any redundancy. A consequence of his grammar's focus on brevity is its highly unintuitive structure, reminiscent of modern notations such as the "Backus–Naur Form". His sophisticated logical rules and technique have been widely influential in ancient and modern linguistics.It is likely that Panini's grammar and the Rg Veda are the only texts that were passed from one generation to another without being amended. In the Ashtadhyayi language is observed in a manner that has no parallel among Greek or Latin grammarians.

Panini's grammar marks the entry of the non-sacred into Indian thought, and according to Renou and Filliozat, it then defines the linguistic expression of that thought.The great thinkers of ancient India were primarily linguists. It is not possible to understand fully the works of theologians/philosophers such as Shankara, Ramanuja and Madhva without a knowledge of Panini.The Ashtadhyayi is fundamental to the structure of their thinking. It is not a didactic grammar, as it presupposes a knowledge of Sanskrit.

Gradually,mainly after the X century, manuals were produced that reorganised the Ashtadhyayi for didactic purposes. These generally had simpler structures and were less ambitious than their Ashtadhyayi source.Panini made use of a technical metalanguage consisting of a syntax, morphology and lexicon. This metalanguage is organised according to a series of meta-rules, some of which are explicitly stated while others can be deduced. The fundamental principles on which the metalanguage is based are non-redundancy,or the principle of economy,and the necessity of all the rules in the Ashtadhyayi.

The Ashtadhyayi consists of 3,959 sutras (Sutrani) or rules, distributed among eight chapters, which are each subdivided into four sections or padas (padah).From example words in the text, and from a few rules depending on the context of the discourse, additional information as to the geographical, cultural and historical context of Panini can be discerned.You can find some of the Rules in the link attached above with article.

Pāṇini's Ashtadhyayi has three associated texts.The Shiva Sutras are a brief but highly organized list of phonemes. The Dhatupatha is a lexical list of verbal roots sorted by present class.The Ganapatha is a lexical list of nominal stems grouped by common properties.

Auxiliary texts

The Shiva Sutras describe a phonemic notational system in the fourteen initial lines preceding the Ashtadhyayi. The notational system introduces different clusters of phonemes that serve special roles in the morphology of Sanskrit, and are referred to throughout the text. Each cluster, called a pratyāhara ends with a dummy sound called an anubandha (the so calledIT index), which acts as a symbolic referent for the list. Within the main text, these clusters, referred through the anubandhas, are related to various grammatical functions.

Shiva Sutras

The Dhatupatha is a lexicon of Sanskrit verbal roots subservient to the Ashtadhyayi. It is organized by the ten present classes of Sanskrit, i.e. the roots are grouped by the form of their stem in the present tense.The ten present classes of Sanskrit are:    1. bhū-ādayaḥ (root-full grade thematic presents)    2. ad-ādayaḥ (root presents)    3. ju-ho-ti-ādayaḥ (reduplicated presents)    4. div-ādayaḥ (ya thematic presents)    5. su-ādayaḥ (nu presents)    6. tud-ādayaḥ (root-zero grade thematic presents)    7. rudh-ādayaḥ (n-infix presents)    8. tan-ādayaḥ (no presents)

Dhatupatha

9. krī-ādayaḥ (ni presents) 10. cur-ādayaḥ (aya presents, causatives)Most of these classes are directly inherited from Proto-Indo-European. The small number of class 8 verbs are a secondary group derived from class 5 roots, and class 10 is a special case, in that any verb can form class 10 presents, then assuming causative meaning. The roots specifically listed as belonging to class 10 are those for which any other form has fallen out of use (causative deponents, so to speak).

The Ganapatha (gaṇapāṭha) is a list of groups of primitive nominal stems used by the Ashtadhyayi.After Pāṇini, the Mahābhāṣya ("great commentary") of Patañjali on the Ashtadhyayi is one of the three most famous works in Sanskrit grammar. It was with Patañjali that Indian linguistic science reached its definite form. The system thus established is extremely detailed as to shiksha (phonology, including accent) and vyakaran(morphology). Syntax is scarcely touched,but nirukta (etymology) is discussed, and these etymologies naturally lead to semantic explanations.

Ganapatha And Commentary 

The learning of Indian curriculum in late classical times had at its heart a system of grammatical study and linguistic analysis. The core text for this study was the Aṣṭādhyāyī of Pāṇini, the sine qua non of learning. This grammar of Pāṇini had been the object of intense study for the ten centuries prior to the composition of the Bhaṭṭikāvya. It was plainly Bhaṭṭi’s purpose to provide a study aid to Pāṇini’s text by using the examples already provided in the existing grammatical commentaries in the context of the gripping and morally improving story of the Rāmāyaṇa.

To the dry bones of this grammar Bhaṭṭi has given juicy flesh in his poem. The intention of the author was to teach this advanced science through a relatively easy and pleasant medium. In his own words:This composition is like a lamp to those who perceive the meaning of words and like a hand mirror for a blind man to those without grammar. This poem, which is to be understood by means of a commentary, is a joy to those sufficiently learned: through my fondness for the scholar I have here slighted the dullard.Bhaṭṭikāvya 22.33–34.

General purpose high-level programming language such as C++ or Python. The Beginner's Guide to Deliberate Practice

Mind map creator Tony Buzan coined the term ‘mind map’ to refer to a diagram that has a branch or root-like structure radiating from a central image on the page, and which uses lines and color to show relationships, groupings and connections between words, ideas and images. A mind map helps students think clearly and ensures that a range of possibilities are considered, encouraging thinking outside-the-box.

What is a mind map?  

Tony Buzan’s recommendations include: using a landscape format; starting with a central image to represent your topic or theme; using curving lines to add main branches to the center and then connecting these to smaller branches; using single words and images; and adding colors for aesthetic and organizational purposes.

How to make a mind map

Single words are unlikely to express an idea adequately. As you think though possibilities, it is likely that you will want to jot down whole phrases and brainstorm possible ways of beginning or approaching a subject. Intentions and possibilities should be clear to someone else who reads the mind map at a later date.

Images should be sourced first-hand (i.e. drawn or photographed yourself) or clearly referenced, and should be integrated within the mind map in a visually pleasing way
