3-2-1: On systems vs. goals, identity-based habits, and the lessons of life

Despite the vehement push of our contemporary culture to despise laziness, and champion discipline, laziness can actually be utilized to your advantage.

Inherent Laziness

In essence, if you make something easier to begin, you will be more likely to make substantive progress on that activity. This applies to habit building as well - you are more likely to ingrain a habit that is easier to start and perform.

Easier = Better

You can accomplish this in a myriad of ways:<ol><li>Have a dedicated area for studying.</li><li>Put your study paraphernalia in places of easy access. </li><li>Have similar items together (pens in a jar, books on a bookshelf, etc.)</li><li>Try to stay organized as best as possible.</li></ol>

Making it 'easier'

The converse of this idea is that: If you make something harder to begin/access, you will make little/no progress on that activity. This is an important notion for removing unnecessary elements from our studying lives.

If you are distracted by Instagram, YouTube, Netflix, TikTok, or any other social media app, we can use this method to remove them, and be less distracted whilst studying.

Applications for this idea

As you can probably guess, we accomplish this by making these things harder to access.<ol><li>Put your phone into another room - you will have to walk over to the other room in order to access it.</li><li>Silence notifications</li><li>If applicable, use a website blocker to temporarily prevent you from accessing distracting websites.</li></ol>

How to accomplish this

“The secret to getting ahead is getting started.”

If we can make something as easy as possible, 'just getting started' will seem like a breeze, and you will see an immediate improvement in your life, wherever you apply it.

If you want to study well, you need to make studying as easy as possible.

These groups of people compliment each other.Growth teams should have a leader who actively participates in idea generation and experimentation. One of the key responsibilities for the growth lead is to choose core focus areas and objectives. They also must ensure that the metrics that the team has chosen to measure and work to improve are appropriate to the growth goals established.

Organizational Arrangements for Growth Teams

Creating a must-have product is the baseline requirement for rapid and sustainable growth. To know whether a product has made it to a must-have category, create a survey asking the following question: How disappointed would you be if the product no longer existed tomorrow? If at least 40% of the respondents answered very disappointed, then it is a must-have.You can also measure and see if a product has reached a must-have status with the retention rate. When the retention rate is stable over time, then the company can push for more growth.

The hacking process has the following steps:<ul><li>Analyze: look out for what features customers use, what screens they use to visit the app, how often they open the app, and what other apps they use.</li><li>Ideate: members need to submit as many ideas as possible</li><li>Prioritize: Prioritizing means scoring ideas (and deciding on which ideas to pursue and which not to)</li><li>Test: testing is done with the goal of identifying which ideas have practical value.</li></ul>

The Hacking Process

Once you’ve put together your growth team, determined your key growth levers, and done sufficient testing to establish that your product is a must-have, you’re ready to start hacking the first stage of the growth funnel: acquiring customers.The first message a potential customer sees about your product must tell them what they hope to gain. The smallest changes in language can have the most outsize impact in bringing new customers. So start small.

There are two ways to discover which marketing channels bring the most customers: discovery and optimization.You can rank channels based on the following six factors:<ul><li>Cost. How much do you expect to expand on a particular channel compared to others?</li><li>Targeting. How easy is it to reach your intended audience?</li><li>Control. How likely is it for you to change an experiment that’s running?</li><li>Input time. How much time will it take to launch the experiment?</li><li>Output time. How long will it take to get results from the experiment?</li><li>Scale. How large an audience can you reach with the experiment?</li></ul>

A person’s chronotype is essentially the time in which she/he prefers to be awake and active.<ul><li>Some people are more morning types and prefer to start the day during the early morning, while others are more evening types and would rather go to bed later in the night and wake later in the day. </li><li>Young adults often prefer evening activity more than morning activity, while those who are older often prefer the morning rather than the evening. But this isn’t always the case.  </li><li>Chronotypes may also be linked with how people choose romantic partners and even their satisfaction with their relationship.</li></ul>

What’s a chronotype and why does it matter?

In a word, yes, chronotypes can matter for relationships.
