The Metaverse Will Radically Change Content Creation Forever

Everything created on a digital device, such as a smartphone or laptop, has a digital fingerprint attached to the file. That digital fingerprint is called metadata. It sticks to the document, whether a video, photo, spreadsheet or other document, until some person or program removes it. For example, if you take a photo with your phone and view the photo with a metadata viewer, the data will include what phone you used, the date and time, and the latitude and longitude.

Understanding metadata

It is possible to change metadata. For example, when you pull your photo into Photoshop, you can edit the metadata to make it appear that you were anywhere else in the world. It is essential to triangulate metadata with other elements to confirm or debunk an image. Sites such as Twitter or Facebook does not pass along metadata. However, Telegram does not remove metadata on videos and photos shared on it, making it possible to know where images were captured.

Metadata isn't foolproof

When you view a photo or video, the metadata can show if the information is accurate or questionable. If the metadata does not match the claims, it is possibly staged. In addition to examining metadata, researchers also look at smaller details to see if they add up.

How to spot video and photo fakes

Initially, the tech company was the lean, innovative underdog that took on the powerful status quo to free the consumer from how they viewed ideas, institutions and service delivery. But tech can no longer claim that. The so-called tech disruptors of today have unchallenged access, funding, and regulatory support. Disruption is sold as a one-way street where technology can change a social space if it is static but can't be changed in return. Yet, today's disruption is happening through users and networks, not tech companies.

Technological disruption

Grab and Gojek were mobility platforms meant to disrupt the city's existing motorbike taxi market by creating a driver workforce that was anonymised. Instead, the Grab and Gojek drivers used WhatsApp to create thousands of DIY community spaces. Loose driver groups changed into independent, cross-company communities that were organised by drivers for drivers. Yet, this type of disruption is not considered as such. Tech companies label Uber as an innovative disruption while motorbike taxis that provide a similar service are deemed dangerous or chaotic.

Example of disruption

The promise of disruption is much restrained by terms set by tech companies themselves. Companies increasingly try to prevent the ability to use and build upon existing technologies in ways that the original company does not approve of. However, tech is never the first or last mover of change. It is just one of the forces within a complex social world. To design better technology means to take it out of the centre. Technology that responds to people's needs sees users as more than just passive recipients will be best able to harness its power.

‘Disruption’ Is a Two-Way Street

From the 1980s to the early 2000s, the first era of the internet saw services built on open protocols managed by the internet community. This caused people or organisations to grow their internet presence, knowing that the rules of the game would remain unchanged. In the second era of the internet, from the mid-2000s to the present, for-profit companies built software and services that outpaced the capabilities of the open protocols, such as GAFA - Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon. Users eventually migrated from open services to centralised services.

The first two eras of the internet

While billions of people got access to free technologies, it became more difficult for startups and creators to grow their internet presence. Centralised platforms could change the rules at any moment, taking away their audiences and profits. Centralisation could also create societal tensions. We see this in debates over fake news, state-sponsored bots, EU privacy laws, algorithmic biases.

Consequences of centralised software and services

A response to centralisation is for governments to impose regulations on large internet companies, assuming the internet is like the phone, radio, and TV networks. But, hardware-based networks of the past are fundamentally different. They are almost impossible to rearchitect. Software-based networks can be rearchitected. The internet is a software-based network with a simple core layer connecting billions of computers that can run whatever software they want. In time, core internet services will be enabled by crypto-economic networks with abilities that will exceed those of centralised services.

"Web 3": The third era of the internet

Centralised platforms have several problems:They follow a predictable life cycle and try to recruit users to make their services more valuable. Platforms are systems. When platforms move up the adoption S-curve, they grow their power over users and 3rd parties. But when they are at the top of the S-curve, they can really only grow by extracting data from users and competing with complements over audiences and profits. Over time, the best entrepreneurs, developers and investors will tire of building on top of centralised platforms.

Decentralisation is important

Cryptonetworks are built on top of the internet that<ol><li>use consensus mechanisms such as blockchains.</li><li>use Cryptocurrencies to incentivise consensus participants.</li></ol> Cryptonetworks use multiple mechanisms to ensure that they stay neutral as they grow.<ol><li>the contract between cryptonetworks and their participants is enforced in open source code.</li><li>they are kept in check through mechanisms for "voice" and "exit".</li></ol> Cryptonetworks ensure network participants band together toward a common goal - the growth of the network and regard for the token.

Decentralized networks can win the third era of the internet just like they won the first era: because they won the hearts and minds of entrepreneurs and developers. A centralised competitor might have a better product to start with, but an active community of volunteer contributors, governed by an ehtos, will improve at a much faster rate.

With plans to put humans on Mars in the near future, a medical emergency beyond the stars could spell disaster. Nina Louise Purvis looks at how to fix this problemEarlier this year, it was reported that an astronaut in <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/topic/Space">space </a>had developed a potentially life-threatening blood clot in the neck. This was successfully treated with medication by doctors on Earth, avoiding surgery.But given that space agencies and private spaceflight companies have committed to landing humans on <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/topic/Mars">Mars </a>in the coming decades, we may not be so lucky next time.

Background

Surgical emergencies are in fact one of the main challenges when it comes to human space travel. But over the last few years, space medicine researchers have come up with a number of ideas that could help, from surgical robots to <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/topic/3d-printers">3D printers</a>.

One of the Main Challenges to Space Travel

Mars is a whopping 33.9 million miles away from Earth, when closest. In comparison, the <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/topic/international-space-station">International Space Agency </a>(ISS) orbits just 248 miles above Earth.For surgical emergencies on the ISS, the procedure is to stabilise the patient and transport them back to Earth, aided by telecommunication in real time.This won’t work on Mars missions, where evacuation would take months or years, and there may be a latency in communications of over twenty minutes.

Surgeries in Mars?

As well as distance, the extreme environment faced during transit to and on Mars includes<ul><li>microgravity</li><li>high radiation levels and</li><li>an enclosed pressurised cabin or suit.</li></ul>This is tough on astronauts’ bodies and takes time getting used to.We already know that space travel changes astronauts’ cells, blood pressure regulation and heart performance. It also affects the body’s fluid distribution and weakens its bones and muscles. Space travellers may also develop infections more easily.So in terms of fitness for surgery, an injured or unwell astronaut will be already at a physiological disadvantage.

Extreme Environments, Not Only a Distance Issue

But how likely is it that an astronaut will actually need surgery?For a crew of seven people, researchers estimate that there will be an average of one surgical emergency every 2.4 years during a Mars mission.The main causes include injury, appendicitis, gallbladder inflammation or cancer. Astronauts are screened extensively when they are selected, but surgical emergencies can occur in healthy people and may be exacerbated in the extreme environment of space.

How Likely Is It To Need Surgeries in Space?

Surgery in microgravity is possible and has already been carried out, albeit not on humans yet.For example, astronauts have managed to repair rat tails and perform laparoscopy – a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to examine and repair the organs inside the abdomen – on animals, while in microgravity.Surgery by a robot controlled from another lab was successfully used to remove a fake gallbladder and kidney stone from a fake bodyThese surgeries have led to new innovations and improvements such as magnetising surgical tools so they stick to the table, and restraining the “surgeonaut”.

It Has Worked Before...

One problem was that, during open surgery, the intestines would float around, obscuring the view of the surgical field. To deal with this, space travellers should opt for minimally invasive surgical techniques, such as keyhole surgery, ideally occurring within patients’ internal cavities through small incisions using a camera and instruments.A laparoscopy was recently carried out on fake abdomens during a parabolic “zero-gravity” flight, with surgeons successfully stemming traumatic bleeding. But they warned that it would be psychologically hard to carry out such a procedure on a crewmate.

The Obvious Issue

Bodily fluids will also behave differently in space and on Mars. The blood in our veins may stick to instruments due to surface tension. Floating droplets may form streams that could restrict the surgeon’s view- not ideal. The circulating air of an enclosed cabin may also be an infection risk. Surgical bubbles and blood-repelling surgical tools could be the solution.Researchers have already developed + tested various surgical enclosures in microgravity environments. E.g. <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/topic/Nasa">NASA </a>assessed a closed system comprising a surgical clear plastic overhead canopy with arm ports, to prevent contamination.

Bodily Fluids Behave Differently in  Space

When orbiting or settled on Mars, however, we would ideally need a hypothetical “traumapod”, with radiation shielding, surgical robots, advanced life support and restraints.This would be a dedicated module with filtered air supply and a computer to aid in diagnosis and treatment.

The Surgical Environment

The surgeries carried out in space so far have revealed that a large amount of support equipment is essential. This is a luxury the crew may not have on a virgin voyage to Mars.You cannot take much equipment on a rocket. It has therefore been suggested that a 3D printer could use materials from Mars itself to develop surgical tools.Tools that have been 3D printed have been successfully tested by crew with no prior surgical experience, performing a task similar to surgery simply by cutting and suturing materials (rather than a body). There was no substantial difference in time to completion.

Using 3D Printers

Robotic surgery is another option that has been used routinely on Earth and tested for planetary excursions.During Neemo 7, a series of missions in the underwater habitat Aquarius in Florida Keys by Nasa, surgery by a robot controlled from another lab was successfully used to remove a fake gallbladder and kidney stone from a fake body.However, the lag in communications in space will make remote control a problem. Ideally, surgical robots would need to be autonomous.

Robotics Surgery

There is a wealth of research and preparation for the possible event of a surgical emergency during a Mars mission, but there are many unknowns, especially when it comes to diagnostics and anaesthesia. Ultimately, prevention is better than surgery. So selecting healthy crew and developing the engineering solutions needed to protect them will be crucial.Nina Louise Purvis is a postgraduate researcher in space medicine and a medical student at King’s College London. The Internet of Things (IoT) has not been around that long. It was only in 1999 that the term ‘internet of things’ was coined by Kevin Ashton. Ashton used the phrase as the title of his presentation for a new sensor project he was working on and it stuck from there. While the phrase came about in 1999, the concept of connected devices dates back to 1832. When the first electromagnetic telegraph was designed, allowing direct communication between two machines through the transfer of electrical signals.

Small Flash Back:

The world’s first IoT device was invented in the early 1980s at Carnegie Melon University. A group of students from the university created a way to get their campus Coca-Cola vending machine to report on its contents through a network in order to save them the trek if the machine was out of Coke. They installed micro-switches into the machine to report on how many Coke cans were available and if they were cold.

In 1990, John Romkey connected a toaster to the internet for the first time. A year later, a group of students at the University of Cambridge used a web camera to report on coffee. They came up with the idea to use the first web camera prototype to monitor the amount of coffee available in their computer labs coffee pot. They did this by programming the web camera to take photos three times a minute of the coffee pot. The photos were then sent to local computers so everyone could see if there was coffee available.

The 1990s:

The Internet of Things was a common topic used by the media at the beginning of the 21st Century with several major developments paving the way for the future of IoT. LG Electronics introduced the world’s first refrigerator connected to the internet in 2000. Allowing consumers to do their food shopping online and make video calls. This invention was followed by a small rabbit-shaped robot in 2005 that could report the latest news, weather forecasts, and stock market changes. While the first International Conference on the Internet of Things was held in 2008 in Switzerland.

Paving the way for the future of IoT:

The Internet of Things, commonly known as IoT or the Internet of Everything (IoE), is a network of physical objects that are connected and exchange data with other devices and systems over the internet.

What is the Internet of Things?

The IoT consists of sensors and devices collecting data from their surroundings. This data is then sent to the cloud by means of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LPWAN, satellite, or being connected directly to the internet via ethernet. When the data reaches the cloud, it is then processed by software programs. The information is then made available to the consumer in a user-friendly way. This information is communicated to the user to either check on the system or take action and affect the system.

The phrase ‘Internet of Things was coined by Kevin Ashton back in 1999. However, the true Internet of Things history began with the invention of the Internet in the late 1960s. Since the 1960s, we have seen numerous inventions happen leading up to the 27 billion devices we now have connected to the IoT today.In the early 1980s, we witnessed the invention of a Coca-Cola vending machine report on its contents through a network. While the 21st Century saw major developments paving the way for the future of IoT.

The Internet of Things has a limitless future and will eventually become the foundation of everyday life. It will save consumers and businesses time, money and reduce emissions. While the IoT is in its infancy, we can expect to see a high risk in privacy and security breaches. However, once these have been addressed, we will see a much more connected world with each and every individual using and depending on IoT.
