Dave Chappelle is one of the funniest people alive. His humour works for the vast majority of people. Dave adopts different characters as he tells stories in his stand-up routines. It maximises the value of your punchlines. What makes his normal speaking and storytelling so captivating is that he doesn't speak in monotone. He emphasises different words and adds different tones when he's speaking.

Adopt different characters

A pause plus your voice tone creates humour. There's no punchline necessary. Silence at the moment of maximum tension drives home the punchline. While this is very difficult to master, one way to immediately punch up your humour is to leave extra silence in front of the punch line to create maximum tension and the highest mystery.

Good timing

What makes Dave's normal speaking and storytelling so captivating is that he doesn't speak in monotone. He emphasises different words and adds different tones when he's speaking. You can immediately improve your storytelling, especially if it's humorous, by speaking as if you're reading a book to a five-year-old. This will push you in the direction of more engaging storytelling, which is critical if you want anyone to laugh.

Adopt the tone and mannerisms of the character

This is when you use your tone to create the expectation of one punchline, then throw a completely different one. For example, leading with a serious and literal tone to an obviously silly and false punchline. Or, if you meet someone in a social environment and they ask you what you do for a living, you can make up a silly job like a professional boxball player, then riff on why it's so stressful in a serious tone. Eventually, you will drop the joke and give a real answer so you can connect on a deeper level. However, it should introduce a more relaxed vibe.

The fake-out

Most people think that people connect over things like logistics. For example, they share where they grew up, what they do for work, or how they spend their free time.  However, people connect over shared laughter. Allowing yourself to be silly with a tongue-in-cheek response can go a long way rather than perfect reasoning to convince someone.

How To Be Effortlessly Hilarious

If I'm not passionate about it, I can't write it. I can't fake it.

To write a song, you'll have to get a hold of the typical framework. Like people, songs come in all shapes, colours and sizes but commercially it is quite certain that a good song would contain: <ul><li>Verse 1</li><li>(optional: Pre-chorus) Chorus</li><li>Verse 2</li><li>(optional: Pre-chorus) Chorus</li><li>Bridge</li><li>Chorus</li></ul>For creativity's sake, it isn't necessary to conform to this structure, there are a variety of structures to choose from. But being a songwriter, you'll have to organise your song in such a way that it fits well. If you're new to songwriting, this structure should be a good start.

Basics

Before you start, you'll have to have a topic in mind. Although I've made songs from merely having a melody stuck in my head or finding a chord progression to write around, it needed to make senseThere are plenty of nonensical lyrics in songs that end up being hits but you'll have to remember that it's always better if the song has authenticity to it's creator. When you write a song coming from a real place, you are able to connect to the listeners much better.Find a topic that interests/ inspires you. If you have writer's block, you can find ideas on the internet to get you started.

The Core

How to find inspiration?I have a practice of keeping a note of any interesting melody I hum and get hooked on to. I even record things such as, an innovative painting, a beautiful idiom, poetry or contronyms.The note app on your phone is an easy and accessible way to keep track and note your ideas before it fades away from memory.Inspiration can come from unexpected places, so keep searching for it. If you wait for it to just come hit you like a ton of bricks, there's a higher chance that it's not going to happen.Take a break, but always come back and search for a new perspective to look form

Inspiration

First,sit back and think about your approach.<ol><li>Would you want it to be sad, happy, angry or any other emotion?</li><li>Would you want it to be a pop, rock, metal, hip-hop, indie, etc. song?</li><li>Would you rather have it change the emotion into something completely different, or stay the same throughout?</li><li>Who's perspective are you writing from?</li><li>Do you want to end it abruptly or do you want to give it some closure?</li></ol>You don't have to have answers for these questions right away because during the process, you're bound to make some changes. Just beware of these questions so it doesn't sound off-topic when you're done.

Game Plan

Hooks are the addictive part of the song. The part that makes your song memorable. Usually hooks are the titles of the song.They can either be a melody or a lyric (most probably the title)It's always good to start the song by thinking of a great hook. Some good hooks are: aliterations, contradictory words, just one word (which is super popular right now), double meaning words, unexpected word combinations, a juicy punchline or an interesting/poetic words.Eg: Be Brave, Live and let die, etc.After you find a good hook, you're ready to start the process.

Before working on the lyrics, find a good melody for your verses, pre-choruses, chorus and bridge. If you can't play an instrument or chords, there are a few backing tracks available on YouTube or other sources to help you craft a song around it.Melody first. Lyrics later.

Melody

From personal experience, I've come across three groups to choose from:<ul><li>A song from your perspective, about something you went through</li><li>A song from a third-person perspective about something you went through</li><li>A story song - includes vivid imagery and a classic story plot</li><li>A song from observation - write about something you observed</li><li>A song on social problems - eg: bullying, gender discrimination, etc</li></ul>This will be helpful to write your first song, choose a category that interests you most.Figure out what YOU want it to sound like to a listener. Then, jot down the structure. Don't worry about rhyming yet.

What Do YOU Want It To Be?

Once you've got some words to work with, start rhyming.Some songs didn't have many rhymes but attracted the public, but until we're stinking famous to be able to do whatever we want... We need to follow atleast some rhyming schemes:<ul><li>AABB</li><li>ABAB</li><li>ABCB</li><li>AAAA</li><li>AABCCB</li></ul>You can change the structure of the song after each part like: a verse can have the ABAB scheme and the chorus could have a ABCB scheme. It's good to switch it up.TIP #1: A good tip I've come to realise is to only use assonancesIt is a type of soft rhyme where only the vowel sounds match, not the consonants.TIP #2: Use multisyllable rhyming.

Rhyming

Phrasing means timingMake sure your words sound on time in the verses or any other places you change your words.Always remember that your chorus is the main part of your song, so it almost never changes lyrics. This is because a chorus is the part of the song that people sing along to, repetition is key.A good method to verify your phrasing is by counting the syllables in your verses and make sure the number is same for each corresponding line.For eg:Feeling good ( 3 syllables)Just (1 syllable)Like I should (3 syllables)Yeah (1 syllable)You can use throw away words to help: but, cuz, yeah

Phrasing

Now, you're good to go. Do some research and listen to different song structures and keep a mental note of how it worksIt's time to weave and piece it together, this is where you get bring your creativity to the table make edits, make changes, make it true to YOU. Even though I've talked alot about things that appeal to listeners, at the end of the day... The song is yours. If the song doesn't sound good to you, approach it with a new perspective another day until it does. Your song is a personification of you. So unless you're happy with the outcome, keep working on it.

Stack It Up

Cadence is the end of the song. It is an important part of song writing because closure is what gives us fulfillment. I do recommend ending it round circle, with something you said in the verse or a melody you used in the verse. It gives the listener a feeling of nostalgia and satisfaction.

Songs are a great outlet of emotions. Our emotions can be expressed simply by words but when you add music to the equation, you bring a whole new dimension to emotion that is more easily understood.Whatever I've said so far can be applied for commercial songwriting but it's always nice to write songs as therapy or as a mental well-being activity. How to write a song

Jeremy Silman is an International Master in Chess and a world class teacher, writer and a playey who has won the American Open and many other tournaments. This book deals with mainly the middle game part of a chess game where a player can win the game based on the position in the board. It requires not just thinking, but deep observations and calculations. Whereas capturing the opponent's king is the ultimate objective in chess, one should not neglect the minor details of the position of game at an instant that can make you won game winning or losing game into drawn one.

Definition: Imbalance is any significant difference in the two respective positions (white side and black side) Main imbalances are<ul><li>Superior minor piece</li><li>Pawn structure</li><li>Space</li><li>Material</li><li>Control of a key file</li><li>Control of a hole/weak square</li><li>Lead in development</li><li>Initiative</li><li>King safety</li><li>Statics vs Dynamics</li></ul>

The Concept Of Imbalances

<ul><li>Imbalances are the roadmap that shows each side what to do. </li><li>It helps in planning</li><li>It helps in observing traps, threats and tactical themes. </li><li>Chess engines usually show the right moves and taking their help sometimes useful but they are fatel to improvement because they don't usually show why a move is right. </li></ul>

<ul><li>Knights (N) and Bishops (B) are the minor piece and have the same value of 3.</li><li>Knight requires support point by pawn or other pieces where it can safely land without being attacked by enemy pawn. It is short range piece so finding such a square to put it is important. </li><li>Knights gain in strength based on the ranks they stand. On 1st and 2nd rank, it is a defensive piece. On 3rd and 4th rank, it can defend and attack flexibly. On 5th and more on 6th rank, it attack the enemy pieces furiously. On 7th and 8th rank, it has less power and does tactical or search or destroy operation. </li></ul>

Superior Minor Pieces

<ul><li>Knights are the best blockaders as it doesn't lose its mobility when sitting in front of an enemy pawn. It is the only piece that can hop over other pieces.</li><li>Knights are short range pieces and Bishops are long range pieces. Knight requires at least 4 moves to stand on a square which is diagonally two squares away, bishop require only one move.</li><li>Knight can attack or defend both colored squares however bishop stuck on one color only.</li><li>Knight loves closed position and Bishop loves open position.</li><li>Bishop, outside the pawn chain and doing defensive or dynamic tasks, is the important piece. </li></ul>

<ul><li>Bishop, trapped behind its pawns is a tall-pawn, is unhelpful. </li><li>Changing pawn structure or moving even a pawn can affect the activities of the Bishop. Don't place pawn in front of it if not necessary. </li><li>The tall-pawn should be moved by moving the pawns or moving the Bishop out of the pawn chain or exchanging it with other minor piece. </li><li>Having Bishop vs knight situation, trading all other pieces to move into endgame helps as long range of Bishop outsmart the short range knight. </li><li>Bishop can restrict the knight on the rim by being 3 squares away horizontally or vertically. </li></ul>

<ul><li>In the endgame with all pawns on one side of the board, the Knight is superior for having access to both colors than the Bishop. </li><li>In a situation B + B vs B + N, trading one of the enemy Bishop to lead to B vs B or B vs N is more beneficial of the side having the knight. </li><li>N + N do not work well, exchanging them for N or B is beneficial. </li></ul>

<ul><li>An effective Rook needs an open file</li><li>Although it has 5 points, it is inferior to 3 points of Knight and Bishop when it is not in an open file. </li><li>The Rook strategy: creating a open or half open file, exerting pressure on the pawns or pieces on that half open file, fighting to dominate it, penetrating into the enemy position on them </li><li>Rook on 8th rank can do tactical or attacking actions, back rank mates. </li><li>Rook on 7th rank restricts the opponent king and targets all the undeveloped enemy pawns</li></ul>

Rooks

<ul><li>Depending on the position, material needs to be collected or rejected or sacrificed with out attaching fear or other emotions to it. </li><li>Material advantage can give an edge on middlegame and winning chances in endgame so a free pawn or piece should not be neglected if no direct attack in found. </li><li>Sacrificing material requires great courage, if you believe the position is correct to sacrifice some piece or even the queen, you should go for it. Don't fear, play like Tal. </li><li>Both gaining and sacrificing material are just an imbalance like the superior minor piece etc and should be assessed similarly. </li></ul>

Psychological Meandering

<ul><li>Never accept an enemy threats unless it is proved as dangerous. </li><li>Preventing a false threat is actually helping the enemy to win. </li><li>Always believe in your own position</li><li>Stick to your move and check if the move still work against enemy's threats</li><li>Analyse the possible loss of ignoring or preventing the threats</li><li>Don't waste moves</li><li>Instead of thinking "I missed it, I must be doomed" about a surprising move, think "How can I punish this? "</li></ul>

Mental Breakdown

<ul><li>Best attitude is "I will do what O want no matter what you say".</li><li>Don't fall for "I have to" mindset, don't be on autopilot or mechanical. Challenge it and let him know that the only agenda that's going to be pushed is yours. </li><li>Macho Chess is Jeremy Silman's style of saying "Initiative" which means pushing one's own agenda. </li><li>Grandmaster games can help to build this initiative. </li><li>A key position is the one where you sense that the correct move or plan will have a major impact on the game but the right move or plan isn't clear to you. </li></ul>

Macho Chess

<ul><li>Player with the large center has to defend it, if he can make it indestructible, then the center rules. </li><li>Lines that suit your personal comfort level, your style or that particular situation should be choosen. </li><li>Slowly improve your pawns and pieces until everything is optimally placed instead or attacking recklessly. </li><li>Before playing too quickly, Pay Attention. </li></ul>

States Of Chess Consciousness

Play against an isolated d-pawn<ul><li>Trade off all the minor pieces</li><li>Play for Q + R vs Q + R (better than Q + 2 R) since presence of Queens makes it far too dangerous for the defender's king to come forward and join in the defense of the pawn. </li><li>The rook blocks the isolated d pawn and the queen behind it stop the pawn to advance. </li></ul>Play against backward pawn<ul><li>Make sure the backward pawn remain backwards</li><li>Trade minor pieces and pile up with rooks and queen. </li></ul>Double isolated pawns and Triple isolated pawns are worse and can be blocked by single enemy pawn. Make king safe and create more weaknesses.

Weak Pawns

<ul><li>Allows Rook and Bishop to slide and dominate</li><li>Weak squares on 4th, 5th Or 6th rank allow a knight to outpost</li><li>Weak squares can be turned into artificial support point. </li><li>Chess is a team game, placing a piece on a square where it doesn't work with the rest of its army is a bad idea. Everyone should have one same goal. </li></ul>

Weak Squares

<ul><li>Active play at the center against the uncastled king is required. </li><li>Don't allow it to castle safely. </li><li>Bring more pieces to the battle area and penetrate. </li><li>Rip open more lines. </li></ul>

Dragging Down The Central Enemy King

Statics are long term pluses, positional factors. <ul><li>Holes</li><li>Weak pawns</li><li>Material deficit</li><li>Space</li></ul>Dynamics are short term, use them now or die factors. <ul><li>Active pieces</li><li>Attacking possibilities based on a vulnerable enemy king</li><li>Tactics</li></ul>It's critically important which factors the position wants. Transformation between imbalances are possible.

Statics Vs. Dynamics

Space is created by the expansion of pawns, the territory behind the most advanced pawn. Side with less space is passive. Playing for superior minor piece can be a useful for space gain. Side with more space should avoid unnecessary exchanges. To play against opponent's space advantage<ul><li>Exchange pieces </li><li>Use pawn breaks</li><li>Find weak squares created by pawn moves</li><li>Space gaining enemy pawn is the target</li><li>Don't wait until opponent grows the center</li><li>Create space in other sector of the board</li></ul>When center is closed, play has to be on the wings. Play on the side where you have more space or pawn chain point to.

Space

A static powerhouse and/or a dynamic game winner. A pawn majority's ultimate goal is creation of A passed pawn. A passed pawn, even A protected passed pawn can often turn out to be a serious disadvantage when<ul><li>It does not contribute to the main gameplay</li><li>A successful blockade reduces its power. </li><li>A weakness to be protected</li></ul>Passed pawn in K+P or K+Q endgame is usually winning. Side with the passed pawn should<ul><li>Exchange all the minor pieces</li><li>Leaving both sides with R+Q</li><li>Queen should remain to prevent opponent king from defending. </li></ul>Side playing against passed pawn should<ul><li>Create blockade</li><li>Active play of pieces</li></ul>

Passed Pawn

To face and fix weakness and create a temporary learning repertoire<ul><li>Choose openings that don't suit your style/temperament (Tactical player choosing positional openings) </li><li>Choose openings that focus your chess weakness</li><li>Vulnerable, insecure and mostly losing but ultimately learning from mistakes. </li></ul>Imbalances and general ideas from the openings need to be understood. For long term learning, choosing the openings based on own playing style matters the most.

Imbalance In Opening

High level chess demands the balance of tactics and positional skills. Making a plan<ul><li>On the part where you are stronger. </li><li>Activities of the pieces</li><li>2-3 move operations based on imbalances</li></ul>A grand plan is possible when<ul><li>Stronger side has A huge advantage and the defender is hard passed to stop opponent's intentions</li><li>Clearly defined strategic elements like good bishop vs bad bishop Or bad knight. </li></ul>Planning should not be based on personal decision or desires, it's what the position wants or the only way to play.

The Capacity To Affect Change

<ul><li>Steve Jobs first became a billionaire from the Pixar IPO. </li><li>When going public for their IPO, investment bankers examined every aspect of the company, its history, assets, debts, products, profits, markets, distribution channels, management team, competition, and anything else relevant to its success.</li><li>IPO preparations didn't go smoothly — Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley don’t want to do it, so Lawrence finds other 3 smaller investment banks. As part of the process, Steve also finds a couple of Directors for the Board.</li><li>The IPO is a massive success, with Steve owning all of the shares (apart from<warningtag> a small employee share pool).</warningtag></li></ul>

Toy Story comes out after 5+ years in production — it’s super hard to make animations back then as you need to think of every single detail and animate it and then put it back on film for the cinemas. It is a massive hit and becomes the 3rd top grossing animation of all time.

It is so simple, yet so joyous to watch Tony share a laugh about something that actually hurts him so much.

After watching After Life S1 on Netflix, I was just blown back at how deeply it affected me. The show switches between being a full-on makes-me-want-to-cry show and the best comedy show. It has a wonderful cast of characters, with events that either try to teach us a lesson or make us genuinely burst out laughing. Felt I had to share some of the joy and value I got from the show.
