That’s a significant chunk of time, but it shouldn’t be too alarming.After all, meetings are vitally important to the success of any organization. Presidents and their cabinet members decide whether or not to go to war in meetings. CEOs and their board of directors choose whether to expand into new markets or shut down a regional branch in meetings. Meetings are the lifeblood of every organization.Yet the paradox of meetings is that we generally don’t like them. In fact, some of us despise them.

Meetings: The Necessary Evil

<ul><li>Too many meetings are just plain boring. They’re tedious and uninspired.</li><li>The leader is too focused on agendas and ending on time to notice a lack of engagement.</li><li>Most meetings have an aftertaste of being drained.</li><li>The worst part of participating in a mind numbing meeting is the lack of a commensurate return. Injecting Drama: The Hook

An intelligent group of diverse people will seldom agree on issues that matter. It’s natural and productive for disagreement to unfold. Working to resolve those differences and compromise on a unique solution is interesting, productive, and fun.When you avoid these disagreements and stifle debate, you bury resentment and frustration that will fester and manifest itself in other forms of unproductive personal conflict, or politics. You have deprived your team of actively engaging in the meeting and working towards a better solution.As a leader, you must have the courage to mine for conflict.

Sometimes the group in attendance will be reluctant to challenge each other in active debate. One tactic you can use to mine for conflict in this situation is to give real time permission. At the start of the meeting, a leader may announce that the topic is expected to drive conflict, and that meeting members are encouraged to debate and challenge one another.Acknowledging the discomfort associated with conflict, while still challenging the group with your expectation up front, is a great way to diffuse tension and set the meeting up for a healthy and engaging debate.

Give Real-Time Permission

A meeting without contextual structure leaves a bad taste in everyone’s mouth. One generic meeting format is a surefire recipe for ineffective meetings.Without context, some team members will believe that the meeting should have been shorter and focused on tactical day-to-day issues, while others will be upset that the meeting didn’t allow enough time to have a thorough strategic discussion. You cannot satisfy both at the same time. We must be disciplined to structure our meetings with the purpose to cater towards a specific business need.

Providing Context with Structure

The daily check-in is a 5-minute standing meeting where the team gets together in the morning to clarify the actions they intend to take that day. It provides a forum for ensuring nothing falls through the cracks and the team is informed and aligned with what everyone else is doing. You will be amazed by how just 5 minutes in the morning will drastically reduce the number of superfluous emails between team members sent throughout the day.The rules for the Daily Check-In are simple. 5 minutes. Standing. Everyday.

The Weekly Tactical is analogous to a weekly staff meeting, but the focus is more disciplined. The Weekly Tactical is focused exclusively on tactical issues of immediate concern.The rules for the Weekly Tactical are as follows: Everyone always attends. It is facilitated with a sense of discipline and structural consistency.

Lightning Round: A quick, around-the-table reporting session in which everyone communicates their two or three priorities of the week. Each person is given 60 seconds.Progress Review: Next, the group should routinely review the reports on critical business information or metrics. This should take no longer than five minutes.Real-Time Agenda: The agenda for a Weekly Tactical should NOT be set before the meeting, but only after the lightning round and progress review have taken place.

When they experience regulatory fit (it feels right), they are even more likely to cheat. Those with a strong moral compass (low disengagers) were less likely to cheat. They're even less likely to do wrong when they are under regulatory fit.

The dogma is this: If we are interested in maximising the welfare of our citizens, we have to maximise individual freedom.  The reason is that freedom is good, valuable, worthwhile, and essential to being human. The way to maximise freedom is to maximise choice: The more choice people have, the more freedom they have. The more freedom they have, the more welfare they have.

We have an almost unlimited variety of choices, for example, hundreds of salad dressings, an unlimited variety of phones, choices in health care, prescription drugs and more. Even something like our identity can become a matter of choice. We get to invent and reinvent ourselves as often as we please.  This huge freedom of choice means we have to make a decision, again and again and again. Should I answer this call? Should I respond to this email? Should I draft this letter?

Too many choices

Too much choice has two negative effects on people:<ol><li>Paradoxically, it produces paralysis rather than liberation. Too many options, and people find it very difficult to choose at all.</li><li>Even if we overcome the paralysis and make a choice, we end up less satisfied with the result of our selection than if we had fewer options. It's easy to imagine that a different choice would've been better.</li></ol>

Not everything should be a matter of choice

Too many options lead us to expect perfection - you may never be pleasantly surprised by quality because your expectations have gone through the roof.  When you choose from thousands of options, you may always feel disappointed. You may think you're at fault because you could've chosen something better. As a result, you have higher expectations and do better in general, but you still feel worse.

The problem that lies in the modern, affluent, Western societies is that expensive, complicated choices don't help. They make us worse off. Therefore, income redistribution can make everyone better off, because of how excess choice plagues us. Too many choices don't give freedom. It paralysis us, and decrease satisfaction.

Quitting social media isn't easy because as long as you are connected to the internet, the internet will find a way to ensnare you in some form or another.Okay, there are 30,000 hours of newly uploaded content per hour on YouTube. That’s almost 3½ years worth of video added to the bottomless internet pit every hour. This literally means that you will never, ever, catch up with how much content there is out there. And that’s just YouTube alone.

Can't Let Go Of Social Media

The trick here is not to squeeze in more in the hours of the day (it’s not possible anyway), but to work with “what I want”.We can’t change the number of hours in the day, nobody can. The only thing we can change is how much time we sleep, and other things we do on a daily basis. So we need to really ask ourselves, are we willing to give up sleep, work, and connecting with people, to consume that much more content to catch up with all this stuff that is put out into the world? Probably not. So the only thing that we can change is choosing what we want to consume.

Making Peace with Infinity

The first step is to acknowledge that you can never finish watching every video, TV show, or movie you want in the world. You can never finish reading every book you want. You can never finish scrolling through every page on Reddit. There’s just too much and you have to accept that there are just some things in this world that you are going to miss out on.And that’s okay.

Step 1: Give up Wanting It All

The second step is to have priorities to what you consume. This is to be conscious of what you really want to consume, and not just because it’s there. It’s very tempting to let the YouTube recommended videos or autoplay decide for you what to watch next. But if what’s there is not the priority of what you want to consume, don’t do it.

Step 2: Discern the Priorities

<ul><li>The pages of Instagram and Facebook are an endless scroll, they are always there, and there is always more.</li><li>You have to set self-imposed content and time limits. Decide that you will watch just one episode, or will scroll for only 10 minutes.</li><li>Even if you exceed these guidelines occasionally, it is good to have them.</li></ul>

Step 3: Setting up limits

We can’t expect ourselves to be able to resist triggers if we don’t train our nervous system to handle these triggers.These triggers could just be as simple as the tempting infinite scroll, or the eye-catching thumbnail of a YouTube video. The ones that trigger your dopamine response to want to consume and satisfy the curiosity that has been planted in you.Meditation at the start of your day can help inject some calm throughout your day and make you less jittery.

Step 4: Training Your Nervous System

Like it or not, “content” is here to stay. As long as we progress technologically in this information age, where content is king, we have to live with it. Even this stash, it's content.So our duty to ourselves is to find the content that energizes us, content that we choose to consume, so we don’t fall into the infinity of the internet. We have to make peace with how we will never experience all that is out there, and that’s okay.
