Eliminating Guilt, Shame, Regret, And Worry - Key Points

It has been said that we are living in an epidemic of social alienation and <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/depression">depression </a>. Cognitive psychologists tell us that depression is often a result of how we interpret the world around us and the role we play in that world. Feelings of guilt, regret, and shame can fuel the fires of depression and further contribute to social withdrawal and alienation. Worry, that is, repetitive concern or rumination, then acts as a catalyst. It may be that a better understanding of what these feelings are and their relationship to one another will help you better control them and even free you from their burden.

If you read the <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/self-help">self-help </a>literature, you will find potentially confusing discussions of guilt, regret, and shame. It seems we have fallen prey to accepting Humpty Dumpty’s assertion “When I use a word…it means just what I choose it to mean neither more nor less.” To clarify the confusion surrounding guilt, regret, and shame, let’s simply rely on denotation to help us clarify and differentiate.

Understanding Guilt, Regret, and Shame

Guilt, simply said, is a belief in culpability or responsibility for some perceived offense or wrongdoing. There are largely four types of guilt: <ol><li>Guilt for doing something you should not have </li><li>Guilt for not doing something you should have </li><li>Guilt by association </li><li><a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/guilt">Survivor's guilt </a>(sometimes experienced by accident survivors, survivors of violence, and military members). </li> </ol>

A frequent corollary of guilt is regret. Frankly, regret can be a natural and healthy response to guilt. Regret involves accepting responsibility for some perceived offense or wrongdoing and being remorseful about it. It is often related to thoughts of contrition or repentance and it often leads to subsequent corrective actions and even preventive actions in the future. So regret is not necessarily a bad thing, unless it leads to shame.

Shame is the angst and distress often associated with guilt. It involves <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/embarrassment">humiliation </a>, a loss of honor or respect. Shame can take <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/stress">stressful </a>regret and turn it into a disaster. Shame is not healthy. It serves no useful purpose.

In the early 1990s, Kenneth Smith and I, as well as others, began a research project that has now spanned 30 years. Our initial goal was to discover what factors in the workplace contributed most to psychological <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/burnout">burnout </a>and stress-related physical illness. Having collected and analyzed survey data over the course of decades, and using statistical methods such as factor analysis and structural equation modeling, we made a startling discovery.

Worry

We learned that worry (repetitive concern) was a significantly toxic psychological process that was the essence of what we called stress, and was a major determinant of burnout (personal exhaustion). Worry predicted psychological disorders and physical illness. If shame can take regret and turn it into a disaster, worry supercharges that psychological disaster and turns it into a catastrophe, often relentlessly.

In 1597, Sir Francis Bacon wrote in his Meditationes Sacrae that knowledge itself is power. It influences. It empowers. So how can information help release guilt, regret, shame, and worry? Understand that guilt, regret, shame, and worry are not four independent stressors, but are often interrelated. They represent a virtual linear cascade that begins with guilt and, like a musical crescendo, builds in intensity and duration, culminating in shame and worry.

39 Psychological Facts About Friendship (2022) Most People Don’t Know I Interesting Facts

Many of us have been there: Faced with an opportunity to make a great impression, personally or professionally, we say or do the wrong thing and feel like we blew it. Whether in a job interview or on a first date, we wonder if we can have a “do-over.” According to research, the answer is yes.

“Can I Get A Do-Over?” Intentions And Impressions

Marco Brambilla et al. (2019) examined the impact of different types of information about personality and character on the making and updating of first impressions. They note that competence, sociability, and morality impact impression formation differently, but morality establishes the primary basis for the way we evaluate other people.

First Impressions Depend On Competence, Sociability And Morality

Investigating whether we update our impressions of others by all three factors equally, the researchers had study participants revise their impressions of a person upon receiving new and inconsistent information in all three realms. They found that information about morality was viewed as more revealing of interpersonal intentions, causing a greater change in impression than when presented with new information about competence or sociability.

But Morality Beats Competence And Sociability

Regarding negative impressions, the researchers found that immoral people are viewed more negatively than people who are unsociable. Negative impressions, however, improved more significantly when positive information about morality, versus sociability, was added to previous negative qualities. They also noted that in contrast, impressions about someone deteriorated when subjects who had originally learned about positive qualities subsequently learned about negative moral (versus sociability) qualities.

Better Unsociable, Than Immoral; No Do-Over For The Immorals!

More recently, Andrew Luttrell et al. (2022) examined how subsequent information can alter first impressions in a job interview context. They tested the impact of the Moral Primacy Model, which proposes that as we form impressions of others over time, information about a person’s morality is more significant than information about competence or sociability.

Testing the Moral Primacy Model in a job interview setting, the researchers found that despite planning to prioritize competence over morality when making a hiring decision, impressions changed more significantly upon receipt of new information about a subject’s immorality, rather than incompetence. Interestingly, when the new information about the subject was positive, they did not find a moral primacy effect.

Better Incompetent, Than Immoral; No Do-Over For The Immorals!

Taken together, research supports the reality that personally or professionally, morality matters. In all cases, information about morality drives impression management both initially, and over time. So despite the accuracy or inaccuracy of first impressions, especially in domains such as sociability and competence, learning about morality-related character traits such as honor and integrity can always enhance first impressions—which are usually not as bad as we think in the first place.

The tendency to engage in gossip may be endemic to social life, particularly when it’s so easy to engage in idle online chatter. By definition, gossip doesn’t have to be negative, but as conveyed by the often-associated adjective “juicy,” it usually does contain unflattering observations about others who themselves are unaware that they’re the subject of conversation.

Gossip is hardly a phenomenon unique to the age of social media. As noted in a 2022 paper by KEDGE Business School’s Ghulam Murtaza and colleagues, “in line with its Shakespearian meaning, gossip has been massively associated with destabilizing and organizationally disruptive phenomena”.

Maintaining that gossip in the workplace can be particularly disruptive, the French research team focused on an industrial setting. The 306 employees in their sample represented 66 software houses and call centers, all located in Pakistan, who ranged from technical engineers and programmers to those working in the support areas of sales, marketing, and human resources.

The study’s main premise was that employees exposed to negative gossip would be more likely to engage in counterproductive work behaviors toward the company (e.g., taking extra time for themselves during breaks) and toward other workers (e.g., saying something hurtful to someone).

The extent to which participants felt they were the targets of negative gossip, in turn, was hypothesized to predict emotional exhaustion or burnout, and it was this exhaustion that ultimately would lead to higher levels of counterproductive work behaviors. People exposed to high levels of social media usage at work, furthermore, were predicted to be more negatively affected by gossip.

The authors further hypothesized that not everyone would show this unfortunate pattern. Mitigating the pathway leading from gossip to exhaustion to counterproductive work behaviors, in the model developed by the research team, is “moral attentiveness,” a personality trait encompassing awareness of moral experiences in daily life (perceptual moral attentiveness) and the tendency to take moral issues into account when making decisions (reflective moral attentiveness).

If given a chance to cheat, such as keeping a package sent to you by mistake, would you do it? Would it even seem like a moral issue to you? If so, then you theoretically would be high in the moral attentiveness trait, and in the workplace would be less likely to figure out ways to cheat the company or take aim at your fellow employees, even if gossip made you angry.

“No, That’s Not Me; I Don’t Do That.”

The general framework of the Murtaza et al. study falls in the category of a “conservation of resources” model in the organizational literature. This model predicts that gossip leads to “emotional consumption” as employees use their energy at work to fend off hurt feelings. Even though specific to the workplace, the conservation of resources model can also provide a useful approach to understanding how people react to negative gossip in their own ecosystems of family and friends.

After subjecting the data to the predicted model, the research team found that the highest levels of counterproductive work behaviors were indeed conducted by workers low in moral attentiveness (combining perceptual and reflective varieties) and heavily exposed to social media.Emotional exhaustion served as the link between gossip exposure and counterproductive work behaviors.

As the authors concluded, “we believe that damaging conversations about someone who is not present can be a toxic virus that spreads and ultimately deteriorates an organization's environment”. The “dark side” of social media use, furthermore, was supported by the findings that the hurt feelings created by gossip on a public platform could create an even greater desire for retribution in the workplace setting.

Turning to the buffering role of moral attentiveness, the authors further go on to note that “attentiveness to ethics plays a role as a resource for facing stressful situations.” People high in moral attentiveness avoid emotional exhaustion because they are able to find strength in their own ability to behave in an ethical manner.

Based on the KEDGE school study, these 2 key strategies can help inoculate us against gossip's ability to bring us down:<ol><li>Shoring up our moral attentiveness: We’ll be less likely to seek retribution, and cause further damage to our relationships, if we vow to take the moral high road, even when attacked.</li><li>Taking pride in our strength of character: High moral attentiveness can build our self-esteem, a valuable resource to have in any situation.</li></ol>

Prevent And Prepare

Those “slings and arrows” of negative gossip, from this standpoint, become tiny insults rather than grave threats to our inner sense of well-being. Let the petty people gossip about us, in other words, it’s their problem and not ours. To sum up, exposure to gossip is hardly a pleasant experience. However, by digging deep into our own personal reserves, we can let that gossip pass us by as we pursue our own inner path to fulfillment.
