Here are just a few examples. There is ‘gaslighting’, which involves encouraging someone to doubt her own judgment and to rely on the manipulator’s advice instead. Guilt trips make someone feel excessively guilty about failing to do what the manipulator wants her to do. Charm offensives and peer pressure induce someone to care so much about the manipulator’s approval that she will do as the manipulator wishes.

We Are Constantly Subject To Attempts At Manipulation

Perhaps manipulation is wrong because it harms the person being manipulated. Certainly, manipulation often harms. If successful, manipulative cigarette ads contribute to disease and death; manipulative phishing and other scams facilitate identity theft and other forms of fraud; manipulative social tactics can support abusive or unhealthy relationships; political manipulation can foment division and weaken democracy. But manipulation is not always harmful.

Is Manipulation Wrong Because It Harms?

Suppose that Amy just left an abusive-yet-faithful partner, but in a moment of weakness she is tempted to go back to him. Now imagine that Amy’s friends employ the same techniques that Shakespeare’s Iago used on Othello. They manipulate Amy into (falsely) believing – and being outraged – that her ex-partner was not only abusive, but unfaithful as well. If this manipulation prevents Amy from reconciling, she might be better off than she would have been had her friends not manipulated her.

Beneficial Manipulation

Yet, to many, Amy’s friends’ manipulation could still seem morally dodgy. Intuitively, it would have been morally better for her friends to employ non-manipulative means to help Amy avoid backsliding. Something remains morally dubious about manipulation, even when it helps rather than harms the person being manipulated. So harm cannot be the reason that manipulation is wrong.

No, Manipulation Is Not Wrong Because It Harms. 

Perhaps manipulation is wrong because it involves techniques that are inherently immoral ways to treat other human beings. This thought might be especially appealing to those inspired by the idea that morality requires us to treat each other as rational beings rather than mere objects. Perhaps the only proper way to influence the behaviour of other rational beings is by rational persuasion, and thus any form of influence other than rational persuasion is morally improper. But for all its appeal, this answer also falls short, for it would condemn many forms of influence that are morally benign.

Is Manipulation Wrong Because It Is Morally Dubious?

For example, much of Iago’s manipulation involves appealing to Othello’s emotions. But emotional appeals are not always manipulative. Moral persuasion often appeals to empathy, or attempts to convey how it would feel to have others doing to you what you are doing to them.

Morally Benign Influence 

Similarly, getting someone to fear something that really is dangerous, to feel guilty about something that really is immoral, or to feel a reasonable level of confidence in one’s actual abilities, do not seem like manipulation. Even invitations to doubt one’s own judgment might not be manipulative in situations where – perhaps due to intoxication or strong emotions – there really is good reason to do so. Not every form of non-rational influence seems to be manipulative.

Not Every Form Of Non-rational Influence Is Manipulative

It appears, then, that whether an influence is manipulative depends on how it is being used. Iago’s actions are manipulative and wrong because they are intended to get Othello to think and feel the wrong things. Iago knows that Othello has no reason to be jealous, but he gets Othello to feel jealous anyway. This is the emotional analogue to the deception that Iago also practises when he arranges matters (eg, the dropped handkerchief) to trick Othello into forming beliefs that Iago knows are false.

When Is An Influence Manipulative? Think Of Iago And Othello. 

Manipulative gaslighting occurs when the manipulator tricks another into distrusting what the manipulator recognizes to be sound judgment. By contrast, advising an angry friend to avoid making snap judgments before cooling off is not acting manipulatively, if you know that your friend’s judgment really is temporarily unsound.

The Manipulator Knows That He Tricks When He Tricks

What makes an influence manipulative and what makes it wrong are the same thing: the manipulator attempts to get someone to adopt what the manipulator herself regards as an inappropriate belief, emotion or other mental state. In this way, manipulation resembles lying. What makes a statement a lie and what makes it morally wrong are the same thing – that the speaker tries to get someone to adopt what the speaker herself regards as a false belief.In both cases, the intent is to get another person to make some sort of mistake.

The Resemblance Between Manipulation And Lying 

The liar tries to get you to adopt a false belief. The manipulator might do that, but she might also try to get you to feel an inappropriate (or inappropriately strong or weak) emotion, attribute too much importance to the wrong things (eg, someone else’s approval), or to doubt something (eg, your own judgment or your beloved’s fidelity) that there is no good reason to doubt. The distinction between manipulation and non-manipulative influence depends on whether the influencer is trying to get someone to make some sort of mistake in what he thinks, feels, doubts or pays attention to.

Who’s Worse? The Liar Or The Manipulator?

It is endemic to the human condition that we influence each other in all sorts of ways besides pure rational persuasion. Sometimes, these influences improve the other person’s decision-making situation by leading her to believe, doubt, feel or pay attention to the right things; sometimes, they degrade decision-making by leading her to believe, doubt, feel or pay attention to the wrong things.But manipulation involves deliberately using such influences to hamper a person’s ability to make the right decision – that is the essential immorality of manipulation.

How To Recognize Manipulation

It is tempting to think that manipulation is a kind of influence. But as we have seen, kinds of influences that can be used to manipulate can also be used non-manipulatively. What matters in identifying manipulation is not what kind of influence is being used, but whether the influence is being used to put the other person into a better or a worse position to make a decision.

Were There Damages?

So, if we are to recognise manipulation, we must look not at the form of influence, but at the intention of the person using it. For it is the intention to degrade another person’s decision-making situation that is both the essence and the essential immorality of manipulation.

Expectations themselves aren’t a problem. The problem is that we rarely examine or update our expectations…Unrealistic expectations actually fragelize you and how lowering your expectations can surprisingly lead to more confidence and peace of mind.So, anytime you find yourself getting frustrated or resentful, use it as a cue to check in on your expectations, and if at all possible, update them to be more realistic.

Make it a practice to judge persons and things in the most favorable light at all times and under all circumstances.When you’re in the habit of judging things—including yourself—in moral terms (right vs wrong, good vs bad), it’s easy to end up moralizing about things that aren’t actually moral. This results in an extra layer of guilt or shame that’s both unnecessary and confidence-killingThere’s a time and place for moral judgments. But if you want to feel more confident and resilient, be careful not to moralize things that aren’t actually moral.

Like expectations, criticisms are not necessarily bad. In fact, we all need to be critical in order to grow, improve, and be better—both for ourselves and the people we care most about.But criticisms are dangerous because they easily slip from healthy and productive to unhealthy and hurtful. Be careful with criticism, including self-criticism. One simple way to distinguish whether your criticism might be helpful vs unhelpful is whether you’re criticizing a specific behavior or action vs an entire person. In other words, don’t overgeneralize with your criticisms.

Shift your criticism from people to actions

Here’s a counter-intuitive idea about dealing with fears and insecurities and building confidence:The solution to internal problems is usually behavior change. While it’s good to be aware of your thoughts and feelings, and to periodically reflect on them, most people who are anxious and insecure spend WAY too much time thinking about how to feel better and far too little time doing confidence-building things despite how they feel.<ul><li>Instead of: “If only I felt X, I could do Y.”</li><li>Try this: “I can do Y despite not feeling X.”</li></ul>

Shift your focus from thoughts and feelings to behavior

<ul><li>It’s very difficult to think your way out of worry and anxiety… analyzing your worries usually just leads to more worry, and as a result, more anxiety and insecurity. </li><li>If you’re racked with imposter syndrome, you can tell yourself that you’re smart and capable until you’re blue in the face, but it’s unlikely to change how you feel. </li><li>If you constantly feel anxious around other people, you can analyze your past and how terrible it was that your parents didn’t love you enough, but that’s not going to make your social anxiety go away. </li> </ul>

From “If only I felt X, I could do Y.”

On the other hand, when you commit to make small, but meaningful changes in your behavior despite how you think and feel, good things tend to happen:<ul><li>When you commit to going to the gym despite worrying about what other people will think of you, you’ll find yourself feeling more confident the next time.</li><li>When you commit to attending small social events despite feeling nervous, you give your brain a chance to learn that maybe you’re not quite as socially awkward as you keep telling yourself—and as a result, get a little more confident.</li></ul>

A mindset is like your default way of thinking about things. Mindset work is key to nearly every aspect of our emotional health and wellbeing, but it’s especially helpful if you struggle with anxiety and self-doubt and want to become more confident.

We often find ourselves with nothing to say during conversations, which often leads nowhere and results in a lack of connection. However, by improving our conversational abilities, it’s possible to combat that.As such, here are the three stages of having a good conversation:<ol><li>The Approach.</li><li>The Small Talk.</li><li>The Deeper Conversation.</li></ol>

The Three Stages

Many people struggle to get past this stage due to a fear of rejection; however, through introspection and confronting and coming to terms with the socializing problems in your past, you can overcome that.Journaling is especially useful, and it can be helpful to ask yourself, “why do I feel like this person will not like me or care about what I have to say?” and “does my social anxiety come from a bad childhood experience or recently?”.Once you let the past go, you can start approaching people again and relinquish your past self’s control over you.

The Approach

Once you approach someone, you’re going to have to accept the fact that there’s probably going to be some awkward small talk at first.Transitioning from small talk to a deeper conversation is a skill that takes practice, but an easy way to start is by embracing the awkwardness and by not taking the conversation too seriously, as that will help make a conversation less awkward.Regardless, you’re going to have to say something though, so to start a conversation, consider talking about something that’s going on and expanding from there by adding input and asking questions (preferably open-ended)

The Small Talk

Don’t be interesting, be interested.You don’t have to say a lot to have a good conversation, as actively listening to the people you’re talking with and building off of it is a great way to make them open up and to establish a good connection.

You Don’t Have To Say Much

If you become someone who is easy for others to talk to through what you say and how you act, others will mimic that behavior and do the same for you. It’s also important to maintain eye contact, have an open posture, smile and nod to show you’re listening, etc., as being physically open will make others more comfortable around you.Initiating vulnerability during the conversation through your words and not being afraid to talk about deeper subjects, as well as following up with open-ended questions, is another great way to make people open up to you.

The Deeper Conversation 

It’s important to remember that the entire conversation doesn’t have to be deep and meaningful and that humor can also help forge strong connections.Another thing is that most conversations in life are going to be messy, and that’s okay, because the rare opportunities where that isn’t the case become so much more valuable as a result.

“Success” is the wrong word to describe the achievement of any realm. The word itself is not necessarily wrong, but the attribution given to it by society makes it misunderstood.I want to be remembered as a man of value who had enough determination to fulfill his ambitions.

I must at all costs ensure that I do not frustrate the sacrifices I am making. I feel like I'm doing the right thing. But damn, it's hard.By now it's not about "success" or not, but just making the most of what I'm sacrificing.I have to keep in mind that I am not yet who I want to become, and if I get comfortable with my current state I will never be.

The greatest paradox of our life is that we value more the things we can replace (materialism) than the things we cannot replace (health, family, relationships).The search for absolute truth is wrong.Always hold onto the values ​​you have been taught and never take them for granted. Never think that something can be absolute truth. You only have to do two things: learn to reduce your filter and ask the right questions.

Getting People To Open Up

The reason we are often afraid to say certain things or act in certain ways is because we’re afraid of others reacting negatively. This fear often leads to small talk and results in conversations that truly don’t matter.If you don’t really filter yourself in a conversation and say what actually matters to you with no regard to how strange it is, others will perceive you as someone who doesn’t care about society and as such will feel safer to tell you things they’d been bottling up.

Reducing Your Filter

One easy way to start reducing your filter is to share something considered to be sort of unusual in a conversation.For example: squatting on top of a toilet to do your business.Be aware that whether you’re perceived as someone with a reduced filter or someone crazy depends on your perceived value.Your value can be increased through things such as having proper hygiene, having a decent amount of friends, dressing decently well, being in decent shape, being able to hold eye contact, etc.

How To Reduce Your Filter

Once you convince them that you’re someone they can open up to, you have to ask them the right questions.Assumption questions are especially powerful and are when you make an assumption of someone based on an observation and see if it’s true or not. This shows them that you are really listening and causes them to instinctively want to react.
