We don’t do unhelpful things with the intent to harm ourselves, for the most part. We do them because the unhelpful habit is meeting some need.<ul><li>The need might be something like:</li><li>I’m bored and want a dopamine hit</li><li>I feel bad about myself and want to do something pleasurable to take my mind off it</li><li>I feel awkward in social situations and need a distraction</li><li>I’m stressed and need a coping mechanism</li></ul>But if you just stop doing the compulsive habit, you have removed your coping mechanism without finding another way to meet your need.

Why We Have Compulsive Habits

We’re usually pretty judgmental about our compulsive habits. It’s a part of ourselves that we hate or a confirmation that we’re somehow bad or inadequate.This kind of harsh judgment is a defense mechanism meant to help us get better. Beating ourselves up only makes us crave our compulsive coping mechanisms because now we feel bad about ourselves and are stressed out. Compassion is a healthy coping mechanism for stress, give it a try.

Remove Judgment, Add Compassion

<ul><li>Ask yourself if you really want to commit yourself fully to changing a habit. Sleep on it, and ask yourself again, before you half commit.It will come with difficulty, falling on your face, and a new way of seeing yourself. Is this something you want?</li><li>If the answer is absolute yes … then commit yourself fully. </li><li>Tell others about your commitment and ask them to hold you accountable. Promise to report to them every day or every week. Be as committed to this as you’ve been to anything in your life — your marriage, your kids, your job, your best friend.</li></ul>

Persistent, Patient Commitment

Change your environment, so that you aren’t likely to do the old habit. Ask people who live and work with you to hold you accountable. Making it hard to do the old compulsive habit is called “Creating a Moat.” Don’t let your future self, at a moment of weakness, have an easy time of falling back into the old habit. Make it easier to stick to the new habit, even if it’s not especially easy.

Change Your Environment

When we seek to change a habit that we think is embarrassing, we usually try to do it in private, so no one can see our shame. This is a mistake. Doing it alone is very, very hard, and it also reinforces the idea that we are doing something shameful, and that we should be doing this on our own. It’s stronger to do it with the help of others. Using other people’s support is just a more robust approach.

Don’t Do It Alone

When the compulsion to do the old habit happens, if you’re not aware of the urge, you’re likely to obey it without questioning it. It’s an imperative, without awareness.The key is to develop awareness of the urge so that you can notice it and not think of it as an imperative, but rather just a sensation in the body, and perhaps a thought (“Just one time is OK!”). With this kind of awareness, you now have a choice, and can question whether this is what you really want.

Rhonda Byrne is an Australian television writer and producer, best known for her New Thought works, The Secret—a book and a film by the same name. By the Spring of 2007 the book had sold almost 4 million copies, and the DVD had sold more than 2 million copies. She has also been a producer for Sensing Murder. According to an article published by Australia's Herald Sun, Byrne has also worked on the Australian TV series World's Greatest Commercials and Marry Me. Basically it is when we take destructive steps that get us further from our own succes.But if we want to achieve our goals, why do we sabotage ourselves?And more importantly, what can we do to stop this harmful behavior that impacts on every aspect of our lives?Well, first we must identify the causes, stop or eliminate the trigger and keep going with treatment.

Self-Sabotage 

People who self-sabotage might be aware of their actions or they might unconsciously act. But there are several causes for these behaviors:<ul><li>Childhood issues: Our earliest engagement with caregivers affects how we connect to others.</li><li>Difficult relationship effects: Reasons included insecure attachment styles, fear of getting hurt, <a href="https://www.verywellmind.com/how-fear-of-commitment-can-impact-your-relationship-5199748">fear of commitment</a>, and unhealthy relationship beliefs.</li><li>Low self-esteem: They behave in ways that confirm negative beliefs about themselves.  </li><li>Cognitive dissonance: Holding two conflicting ideas at the same time.</li></ul>

Causes of Self-Sabotage

Procrastination: You show others you’re never ready and put off a good outcome. It’s because people fear disappointing others, failing, or succeeding.Perfectionism: Holding oneself to an impossible standard will cause delays and setbacks.They end up feeling ashamed, when something went wrong. Prone to depression, they feel like they are letting everyone down.Self-Medication: To deal with the constant battle between wanting to be successful and the script in their brains saying they can’t be, many soothe themselves through drugs or alcohol.

Common Ways People Self-Sabotage

<ul><li>Stop procrastinating</li></ul>If you keep putting something off what’s important to you, it might be easier emotionally than reaching a goal that you were told you’d never reach. <ul><li>Stop perfectionistic thinking</li></ul>Maybe you overthink every detail. Aim to strive for excellence, not perfection. Make small improvements and note progress on the way toward accomplishing the desired goal.<ul><li>Stop looking solely at the big picture</li></ul>When you shoot for something big, like becoming a top salesperson where you work, a giant goal can feel overwhelming. To prevent acts of self-sabotage, don’t get hung up on minutiae.

How to Stop Self-Sabotaging

If you think you self-sabotage, ask yourself:<ul><li>Is your behavior aligning with your goals?</li><li>If not, what is stopping you from taking action to make your dreams come true?</li><li>Do you feel uneasiness or discomfort when you progress? If yes, dig deeper:</li><li>Is this discomfort based on what others told you that limited your aspirations?</li><li>Is this discomfort based on a fear of failure and worry about looking foolish?</li><li>Are you concerned with achieving more than you thought possible?</li><li>If you do better or achieve more, do you believe success is more than you deserve?</li></ul>
