Some decisions are so simple that you're barely aware you're making them, while others are time consuming, high risk, and can leave you feeling anxious.Decisions can make or break a project or an entire business. And they often involve complex and unpredictable interpersonal issues, too.

A 7 Step Decision Making Strategy

This process will ensure that you make a good decision in a complex situation, but it may be unnecessarily complicated for small or simple decisions. In these cases, jump to Step 5.

Start by considering the decision in the context of the problem it is intended to address. You need to determine whether the stated problem is the real issue, or just a symptom of something deeper.Look beyond the obivious

1.Investigate the situation in detail.

Can you give your decision the attention it needs? Spend some time preparing yourself before diving in to the facts and figures.Remember that most decisions will affect other people too, so it helps to create a constructive environment in which to explore the situation together.This is especially true when you have to rely on other people to implement a decision that you're responsible for. You'll need to identify who to include in the process and who will be part of any final decision-making group.Enable people to contribute to the discussions without any fear of the other participants.

2.Create a constructive environment.

The wider the options you explore, the better your final decision is likely to be. Generating a number of different options may seem to make your decision more complicated at first, but the act of coming up with alternatives forces you to look at the problem from different angles.These can help you to step outside your normal patterns of thinking and come up with some truly innovative solutions.Brainstorming is probably the most popular method of generating ideas.

3.Generate good alternatives.

When you're satisfied that you have a good selection of realistic alternatives, it's time to evaluate the feasibility, risks and implications of each one.Almost every decision involves some degree of risk. You'll need a structured approach for assessing threats and evaluating the probability of adverse events occurring – and what they might cost to manage. You'll also want to examine the ethical impact of each option, and how that might sit with your personal and organizational values.

4.Explore your options.

the next step is to make your decision!If you have various criteria to consider, use Decision Matrix Analysis to compare them reliably and rigorously. Or, if you want to determine which ones should carry most weight in your decision, conduct a Paired Comparison Analysis.If your decision is being made within a group, techniques such as multi-voting and the Modified Borda Count can help you.When anonymity is important, decision-makers dislike one another, or there is a tendency for certain individuals to dominate the process, use the Delphi Technique to reach a fair and impartial decision.

5.Select the best solution.

The Delphi technique is a process used to arrive at a group opinion or decision by surveying a panel of experts. Experts respond to several rounds of questionnaires, and the responses are aggregated and shared with the group after each round.

Now, more than ever, is the time to "sense check" your decision. Before you start to implement your decision, take a long, dispassionate look at it to be sure that you have been thorough, and that common errors haven't crept into the process.Your final decision is only as good as the facts and research you used to make it. Make sure that your information is trustworthy, and that you've done your best not to "cherry pick" data. This will help you avoid confirmation bias, a common psychological bias in decision making.

6.Evaluate your plan.

Discuss your preliminary conclusions with important stakeholders to enable them to spot flaws, make recommendations, and support your conclusions. Listen to your own intuition, too, and quietly and methodically test assumptions and decisions against your own experience. Use Blindspot Analysis to review whether you've fallen prey to problems like over-confidence, escalating commitment, or groupthink. And consider checking the logical structure of your process with the Ladder of Inference, to make sure that a well-founded and consistent decision emerges at the end.

Once you've made your decision, you need to communicate it to everyone affected by it in an engaging, informative and inspiring way.Get them involved in implementing the solution by discussing how and why you arrived at your decision. Become Confident As Introvert

People will try and encourage you to be more social, which definitely isn’t a bad thing. However, it’s important to remember that introverts derive energy simply from time spent alone. Don’t change who you are in the pursuit of fitting in.

1. Accept who you are 

Most introverts will try extremely hard to fit in and not stand out. They want to blend into the background and not be noticed by others. Do not do this. Otherwise, what’s the point in going out in the first place?

2. Don’t be afraid of standing out 

When you find yourself in a new or uncomfortable setting, take note of the conversation starters and topics that keep interesting conversations flowing. This is a good way to learn more social skills especially if you tend to be observant and introspective.

3. Observe others

Whether you go traveling, start a business, change careers or tackle a new project, it doesn’t matter. As long as you’re out of your comfort zone, you will grow. You will NEVER be able to change when you're comfortable.

4. Leave your comfort zone

It may sound weird but speaking properly isn’t always easy, especially if you’re not used to it. Most people will mumble, stutter or simply speak too fast when they're nervous. This then makes them even more nervous.

5. Speak properly

Introverts will often have very negative body language, which then makes them look more nervous, unconfident, and awkward. Stand tall, push your shoulders pack, and keep your head up. My eBook The Art of Body Language goes into much more detail on this.

6. Change your posture

You don’t need to go over the top, but what you wear can have a large impact on how confident you feel. So pay attention to grooming and dress appropriately for the occasion.

The silent treatment can tend to present itself as a response more fitting of the ‘high road’, one of grace and dignity, but research has shown it is anything but.

‘Excluding and ignoring people, such as giving them the cold shoulder or silent treatment, are used to punish or manipulate, and people may not realise the emotional or physical harm that is being done.’

The silent treatment, even if it’s brief, activates the anterior cingulate cortex – the part of the brain that detects physical pain. The initial pain is the same, regardless of whether the exclusion is by strangers, close friends or enemies.

Does Rejection Hurt?

The ability to detect ostracism is hardwired in us – it doesn’t matter if you’re being ignored by a group or a person you can’t stand, the pain still registers.The silent treatment happens when one partner pressures the other with requests, criticism or complaints and the other responds with silence and emotional distance.

Paul Schrodt, PhD, Professor of Communication Studies reviewed 74 relationship studies which involved more than 14,000 participants.Findings from his in-depth analysis revealed that the silent treatment is ‘tremendously’ damaging to a relationship. It decreases relationship satisfaction for both partners, diminishes feelings of intimacy, and reduces the capacity to communicate in a way that’s healthy and meaningful.

The Loudness Of Silence

‘It’s the most common pattern of conflict in marriage or any committed, established romantic relationship. And it does tremendous damage.’

It doesn’t matter which partner demands or which one withdraws, the damage to the relationship is the same. It’s the pattern itself that’s the problem, not the specific partner. The silent treatment should not be confused with taking time to cool down after heated or difficult exchange. Williams suggests that instead of reverting to the silent treatment, try ‘I can’t talk to you right now, but we can talk about it later.’

Charlie Munger, the vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway and one of the most successful investors ever, is said to have the best 30-second mind in the world. He goes from A to Z in one move. He sees the essence of everything before you can even finish the sentence.

How does he do it? Through observing reality and running it against his mental models. In this series of videos, you’ll learn some of the most important models which Charlie Munger uses, which he has talked about publicly. These mental models have helped Munger to conquer the stock market, but they are so diverse that they have applications within many other areas too. For example, they have allowed Munger to be a successful Chairman at a large hospital, and they have allowed him to overcome devastating personal losses.

Charlie Munger: Mental Models for the Rest of Your Life

Psychological manipulation thrives in intimacy. It’s a close, familiar way of using others that requires vulnerability to work well. Because intimate relationships all come with a level of vulnerability, they are the perfect breeding ground for this form of manipulation.Many psychological manipulators are family members, close friends, or romantic partners—these relationships give them an opportunity to build trust and later use that trust as a stepping stone to abuse.

1. Taking Advantage Of Intimate Relationships 

Psychological manipulators rarely, if ever, take responsibility for their actions to their victims—to do so would damage their credibility and cause doubt in the abusive relationship. Most manipulators will adopt a self-righteous attitude with their victims, often centered on how they have been “wronged” by that person in some way, and they will typically excuse their behaviors as retribution for how they have been treated. Their golden rule is simple: If you don’t give me what I want, I am entitled to treat you any way I choose.

2. Projecting Blame 

Psychological manipulators despise boundaries. Their ultimate goal is power and control, and firm boundaries interfere greatly with that goal. To that end, they become skilled at testing and violating others’ boundaries—usually starting with small limits and working their way up as they become more accomplished.Manipulators ensure that this is a slow-burn process. By subtly testing what works and what does not, they will learn how to cross others’ boundaries without being stopped.

3. Violating Boundaries

Psychological manipulators are masters at getting others to question their own reality. This often occurs in the form of telling blatant lies that border on unbelievable or countering a victim’s memory of events. When paired with the abuser’s refusal to accept responsibility for their actions, this technique can be destructive.Gaslighting can be difficult to pinpoint because it’s a gradual process that undermines the sanity of its victims. Many individuals who use this tactic work very hard to convince their victims they are too sensitive or are making a big deal out of nothing.
