Who is Marcus Aurelius?

Of the doctrines central to the Stoic worldview, perhaps the most important is the unwavering conviction that world is organised in a rational and coherent way. More specifically it is controlled and directed by an all-prevading force that the Stoics designated by the term logos. The term (from which English "logic" and the suffix "-logy" derive) has a semantic range so broad as to be almost untranslatable. In simple words, Stoicism is from the outset a deterministic system that appears to leave no room for human free-will or moral responsibility.

What is a Stoicism? 

If the dog refuses to run along with the wagon he will be dragged by it, yet the choice remains his: to run or be dragged. In the same way, humans are responsible for their choices and actions, even though these have been anticipated by the logos and form of its plan. Plain speakingHow to write wellBy Irina DumitrescuI have had many opportunities to ask myself this question lately. Over the past few months I’ve been taking a class on the basics of feature stories. Our teacher is a seasoned journalist who insists that we learn how to edit our own prose ruthlessly. (If he saw this paragraph, he would cut “seasoned” – a cliché – as well as all the words ending with -ly.)

Why is it so hard to write clearly? 

What strikes me as I watch him work is his low tolerance for jargon. I thought I knew what jargon was: words such as “discourse”, “deconstruct” and “problematize”. These are the cigarette-holders of diction: showy, stretched out, more noxious than they look. My teacher’s bar is much higher. If it’s long and Latinate, it’s got to go.

Tolerance for Jargon

I confess to having a soft spot for ten-dollar words. Anyway, it’s easier to avoid jargon than it is to pare down knotty turns of phrase. I once believed that burdening a sentence with adverbs and circumlocutions was a disease that only afflicted scholars. It turns out that many writers do it, whether or not they work in a university. It is as though we are dancing around – and away from – what we mean to say.

One might assume that people write difficult prose because they don’t know any better. But it is not enough to learn the principles of clear writing. A writer can memorize Strunk and White’s The Elements of Style and still find herself using “the way in which” instead of “how”. It is not ignorance that makes writing convoluted. It is fear.

Not Ignorance but Fear

One fear is that by writing simply, we will come across as simple – with all that word’s disparaging associations with disability and low class. When a chorus of pundits insists that modern life is complex, simplicity starts to seem old-fashioned. Once we spoke of love; now we might talk about attachment and co-dependency. Fear has transformed into anxiety. The old words seem too plain to serve.

This prejudice is wrong. One of the fascinating things I noticed when I was first learning to read medieval languages was that poets tended to repeat vocabulary. Instead of using varied terms for different aspects of an emotion or an idea, they used the same word over and over again. They did this because the words were often richer in meaning.

Medieval Languages

Take Old English “mod”, the root of our word “mood”. It was used for the mind, the emotions, the spirit, as well as for certain qualities to be found in a person, such as courage, pride or magnificence. Or consider Middle High German “minne”, which is often translated as “courtly love”. “Minne” could also mean friendship, parental love, commemoration and sex. The medieval poet repeated simple words in order to reveal their layered senses. Today’s translator must consider each word in context and decide on the best modern equivalent.

Words in Context

This can mean rendering one medieval word in five different ways on the same page. But I think there is another, deeper fear that keeps so many writers tied to their obscurities: the terror that someone might understand what they are trying to say. Many writers assume a defensive posture when they sit down to their computers. They are afraid of being taken to task for their beliefs, arguments or point of view. So they slip in “perhaps” and “it could be argued”, making their claims too slippery to pin down.

A Defensive Posture

The alternative to the fortress is, to my mind, the garden. “Garden” writing is inviting, colourful and open to crowds. It allows each reader to find their own way through a poem or an essay, crafting their own meaning as they go. Gardens are also vulnerable. They change with time. The guests might pluck the roses or stomp on the flowerbeds. Someone might be allergic to pollen. To write clear, welcoming language is to open yourself up to complaints.

I think of this as “fortress” writing. It is impenetrable. No critic can storm it, but no reader can enjoy it either. Universities train their students to write like this: not to teach, persuade or delight, but to resist attack. The best argument is not necessarily the most innovative or profound, but the one with the fewest holes in it.

And yet there is nothing as powerful as plain language, as this well-known Middle English religious lyric shows:Nou goth sonne vnder wod,Me reweth, Marie, thi faire rode.Nou goth sonne vnder tre,Me reweth, Marie, thy sone and the.The first line describes the sun’s rays slipping behind the woods. But the poem’s early Christian audience would have known that “wod” and “tre” could also refer to the Cross. Perhaps we are not looking at a forest, but at the sun reddening behind Calvary, highlighting the crosses as it descends.

Plain Language

The speaker pities Mary’s beautiful blushing face, or “rode”, as well as the Rood, lovely in its promise of salvation despite being an instrument of torture. Above all, the repetition of “sonne” – a sun, a son and soon – would have recalled the sunrise, or resurrection, to come. How to go from a weak person to an assertive and strong person who does as he pleases?There are two good things in this question that are wrapped in a lot of confusion — the first is the realization that it is not good to try to please everyone all the time and the second thing is the desire to be assertive. As mentioned above, both hanels are wrapped in a lot of confusion and misguided assumptions.

I’ve had a few times to answer similar questions and it’s interesting that I haven’t seen no one asks, “How can I go from a smart, weak person to a stupid, strong person?” or “How can I lose muscle mass to become a healthier person” For everyone it is clear that such questions are absolute nonsense but only when it comes to feelings everything gets confusing.

Actually, it’s not surprising because we live in a culture that sees emotions as weakness. BE A MAN- A gnarly man who never cries.It’s a mistake. It’s nonsense. It’s like a driving instructor would tell you, “Do you see those two pedals on the floor on the left? You must not step on them under any circumstances!”.Let’s say sometimes you have to turn off emotions. I totally disagree with that (and I’ll say what’s the alternative), but what’s the problem? It cannot be done selectively.

There is a state of emotional darkness, or comfortable numbness as the Pink Floyd sings. You can get into it and we all know how: sugar, alcohol, nicotine, maybe a little stronger stuff. but why? For God’s sake? Why? it’s like cutting off your own leg that scratches your finger.Okay good but what is the alternative? because after all to be such an emotional softie who’s just looking for a way to avoid emotional conflicts by serving others and not standing up for himself is also not good. obviously. So what?

I think it’s a matter of emotional fitness. That being a compulsive lecturer lacks assertiveness is a kind of haloshas. You have to work on the emotional muscles just like on the physical and mental ones. Again, it’s clear about physical fitness and mental fitness, why not about emotions? I already said why.So what to do? first of all changing perception of emotions is good. Sensitivity is power. A common goal for many Muslims is to be able to finish reading the entire Qur'an within the month of Ramadan. However, if you're not confident you don't have to start there right away!Take some time after each prayer to read a few ayats of the Qur'an. It can be just 1 ayat, or a whole surah at a time, but as time goes on these small efforts will help build your confidence and comfort.

1. Read the Qur'an after every prayer

If you're starting to practice reciting the Qur'an, it can be daunting to try and recite entire surahs at once. However, Allah sees all, and He sees and recognizes your effort.Start small and strive for precision, taking care to pronounce each letter properly and clearly. Rather than rushing through, understand the meaning of the words and aim to perfect even the smallest of recitations. In this way, you'll build your confidence as well as fall in love with the beauty of the Qur'an.

2. Recite 1 ayah per day

Ramadan is a month for deepening our faith and knowledge of Islam. You can now find dozens of online lessons and podcasts covering everything from fiqh to the tafseer of selected surahs - and most of them are 30 minutes or less! Put one on in the background while you get ready for your day, or when you're winding down just before it's time to break your fast. A little knowledge goes a long way!

3. Tune in to a podcast, or read more Islamic books

Al-Fatihah is the first chapter of the Qur'an and is one of the most important surahs in the book. Muslims around the world say the Al-Fatihah every day when we pray, so Ramadan is the perfect time to dive into its meaning and significance. As we say it multiple times every day, it also makes it so much more important to understand the meaning behind the words and how it reaffirms our worship of and belief in Allah.

4. Study the  tafseer  of Al-Fatihah

There are 5 obligatory daily prayers in Islam, but each of us is in different stages of our journey of prayer. For some who may be starting out, committing to all 5 prayers can  be difficult for a variety of reasons; for others who are already in the habit of praying 5 times a day, the challenge may be in maintaining khushoo  during prayer instead of letting your mind wander. No matter what your relationship to prayer is, this is a good time to relearn the basics.

5. Relearn the basics of prayer

It gives us more flexibility and ease with timing the prayers and recitation, and we get to pray in a comfortable and familiar location. It's also a chance to spend time with our family and loved ones, and get closer through the observance of our faith.

6. Pray Terawih if you can

Some of us may not have the habit of eating sahur, so why not start trying to create this habit this Ramadan! Sahur can be as little as a glass of water, or a handful of dates. As narrated by Ibn Hibbaan and At-Tabaraani in Al-Awsat: "Allah and his angels definitely send salutations on those who eat Suhoor." Having sahur can help set the tone for the rest of your day - and you can pray the Fajr/subuh prayer immediately afterwards too.

7. Try waking up for sahur

This year, try to be more mindful and aware of what you eat. Taking care of your body is also important in Islam, as is the value of moderation. So try cutting down on sugary drinks, and limiting your desserts and snacks. You can also try to substitute healthier ingredients such as wholegrain rice or try meatless meals. And don't forget to practice good eating habits - don't rush through your food no matter how hungry you are!

8. Be mindful of what you eat

As we're fasting for the whole day, it's important to hydrate ourselves when we get the chance! By hydrating yourself, you're not only ensuring you have enough energy for the day but you'll be in a better mood and find it easier to practice values such as kindness and compassion. Keep a water bottle by your side after iftar, and sip water until you go to bed. Make sure to have water or other fluids during sahur too!

9. Hydrate yourself when you can

One of the values of Ramadan is learning how to resist temptation, and for many of us, the biggest temptation around is our phones! While our phones are essential for communication (or just every part of life) these days, this is a good chance for us to take a step  back as well. If we can resist food and water (which are essential to our survival) for over 12 hours, we can surely resist looking at our phone for just a fraction of that time.

10. Go 'phone-less' for half an hour

During Ramadan, many of us do acts of charity to give back to our community as well as show gratefulness for what Allah has given us. But giving sadaqah (voluntary acts of charity) doesn’t just need to be monetary! So while you may be stuck at home, you can still reach out to do good for others. Whether that be sponsoring meals for those who need them, donating to fundraisers for illnesses or other causes, or even just checking in with your older neighbours to see how they're doing.

A study from the University of Montréal reveals this.They split up adults between the ages of 55 and 75 into 3 groups.Group 1 was trained on video games like Super Mario 64.Group 2 had piano lessons.Group 3 had nothing.The study found that an increase in brain matter within the hippocampus was significant only in the gaming group.

Video games can help reduce cognitive decline that happens naturally as we age

A study from New Zealand used a specially designed game called Sparks to help teenagers dealing with depression.They found that the remission rate was significantly higher in the Sparks arm, 43,7% than in the 'treatment as usual arm' 26,7.Translation Teenagers who played video games were significantly more likely to have their depression cured.CAVEATSPlaying video games excessively is probably bad for your social life.Like any other excessive habit, dooh!

Questions to ask yourself before going out to buy a new book

Assert someone’s credibility & respectability in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academia_(disambiguation)">The Academia</a> is to check their <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H-index#:~:text=among%20different%20fields.-,Calculation,with%203%20or%20more%20citations.">H-index score</a>. This represents how many other scientists are citing their paper. a “successful scientist” will have an h-index of 20 after 20 years; an “outstanding scientist” will have an index of 40 after 20 years; and a “truly unique individual” will have an index of 60 after 20 years or 90 after 30 years.

One should read the full article for a detailed view.

Sturgeon’s law is a philosophical aphorism that states that 90% of everything is crap. And, of course, you should take this with a grain of salt. Sturgeon’s law can still be an interesting framework…

How to read higher quality books

Our first duty is not to hate ourselves, because to advance we must have faith in ourselves first and then in God. He who has no faith in himself can never have faith in God.

Every man should take up his own ideal and endeavour to accomplish it. That is a surer way of progress than taking up other men's ideals, which he can never hope to accomplish.

<ul><li>By doing well the duty which is nearest to us, the duty which is in our hands now, we make ourselves stronger;</li><li>and improving our strength in this manner step by step,</li><li>we may even reach a state in which it shall be our privilege to do the most coveted and honoured duties in life and in society.</li></ul>

Small and consistent steps to improve self is an extraordinary plan! 

Every duty is holy, and devotion to duty is the highest form of the worship of God.

When you are doing any work, do not think of anything beyond. Do it as worship, as the highest worship, and devote your whole life to it for the time being.

<ul><li>Even the lowest forms of work are not to be despised...</li><li>If you wish to help a man, never think what that man's attitude should be towards you.</li><li>If you want to do a great or a good work, do not trouble to think what the result will be.</li></ul>

Just do what is right. The rest doesn't matter.

<ul><li>Inactivity should be avoided by all means.</li><li>Activity always means resistance.</li><li>Resist all evils, mental and physical;</li><li>And when you have succeeded in resisting, then will calmness come.</li></ul>

Be Active, deal with life, learn from failures! Leave no stone unturned. Calm comes only after it.

Doing work with cleverness and as a science; by knowing how to work, one can obtain the greatest results.

He, who always speculates as to what awaits him in the future, accomplishes nothing whatsoever. What you have understood as true and good, just do that at once.

Whatever you do sincerely is good for you. Even the least thing well done brings marvellous results; therefore, let everyone do what little he can.

Any action that makes us go Godward is a good action, and is our duty; any action that makes us go downward is evil, and is not our duty.

<ul><li>He who does the lower work is not therefore a lower man.</li><li>No man is to be judged by the mere nature of his duties,</li><li>but all should be judged by the manner and the spirit in which they perform them.</li></ul>

Work, songs and life.

<ul><li class="ql-align-center">Each work has to pass through these stages - ridicule, opposition, and then acceptance. </li><li class="ql-align-center">Each man who thinks ahead of his time is sure to be misunderstood.</li><li class="ql-align-center">So opposition and persecutions are welcome, only I have to be steady and pure and must have immense faith in God, and all these will vanish.</li></ul>

<ul><li>Do not try to be a ruler. He is the best ruler who can serve well. Be true unto death.</li><li>The work we want - we do not seek wealth, name or fame... Be brave ... Be perfectly unselfish, and you will be sure to succeed.</li></ul>

Help others unselfishly

Doing the duty of the time is the best way, and if it is done only as a duty, it does not make us attached.

<ul><li>We should never think that we can help on even the least thing in this universe. We cannot.</li><li>We only help ourselves in this gymnasium of the world. This is the proper attitude of work.</li></ul>

Helping others is helping yourself.

Whenever you promise to do any work, you must do it exactly at the appointed time, or people lose their faith in you.

Put yourself to work, and you will find such tremendous power coming to you that you will find it hard to bear. Even the least work done for others awakens the power within.

It is the worker who is attached to results that grumbles about the nature of the duty which has fallen to his lot; to the unattached worker, all duties are equally good.

One of the greatest lessons I have learnt in life is to pay as much attention to the means of work as to its end... With the means all right, the end must come.

Do the best you can, do not wait to cross the river when the water has all run down... but actual work, my boys... is better than eternal scribbling and talking.

Our duty is to encourage every one in his struggle to live up to his own highest ideal, and strive at the same time to make the ideal as near as possible to the truth.

This is one of the most intriguing Vivekananda post I read, wrote and read again. Just do what is right. The rest doesn't matter.
