Or maybe, right now, you’d just like to get your kids to bed before you’re exhausted. The only way to make your dreams come true is to influence other people to change their behavior.

Influence Will Realize Your Hopes And Desires

Trying to influence someone means you’re a threat to their time, money, pride, or social capital. Most importantly, influence threatens their attention. Attention is in short supply, and they’re already handling hundreds of influence attempts per day from marketing, kids, bosses, and internal temptations. It’s no wonder that when someone realizes you’re trying to influence them, their gut reaction is to say no or tune you out. They meet your pressure with resistance.

But Influence Will Be Resisted

But when you make an invitation without any pressure whatsoever, people become inclined to lean forward. It’s one of the aikido moves for handling resistance. All you have to do is add a softener to your request like, “I know you’re probably busy,” or “please don’t say yes unless you really want to do this,” or “would you feel comfortable?”

Keep in mind that people are more likely to say yes to a face-to-face request, and far less likely to respond to a social media post. The pressure and likelihood of saying yes depend on the closeness of the interaction. Use your own judgment about balancing the two, and focus on the long run. Conversion doesn’t happen in one conversation—it happens in a relationship.

Make Influence Up Close And Personal

Influence doesn’t work the way you think because you don’t think the way you think. In a nutshell, there are two internal systems governing all our thinking and behavior. Behavioral economists call them System 1 and System 2. System 1 is fast, unconscious, emotional, and instinctive; these are your gut reactions. System 2 is slow, conscious, effortful, and seemingly rational; these are your deliberate decisions.

Influence Isn’t Rocket Science, But It Is A Science

Because the unconscious mind (system 1) is fast, it is the first responder. The conscious mind (system 2) being slow, is the second-guesser. This means the unconscious mind has more influence on the conscious mind than vice versa. Gut reactions can, and often do, influence reasoning. Furthermore, because the conscious mind can focus on only one thing at a time, it has to ignore most of what’s going on in the world. As a result, people tend to make choices that require the least effort.

Relationship Dynamics Of Gut Reactions & Deliberate Decisions

We tend to overestimate the conscious mind because it’s the only one we can experience, but the unconscious mind is far more powerful. Being influential requires us to focus first and foremost on people’s gut reactions, and on making their path to a choice as easy as possible.

The biggest misperception about changing minds is that you need to do it at all. A lot of our behavior doesn’t reflect any conscious thinking; that’s why the best predictor of behavior is ease. It’s more powerful than motivation, price, quality, satisfaction, or intentions.

You might not be selling something, but you can still take inspiration from a little-known marketing metric for measuring ease called the Customer Effort Score, which comes down to a simple question: How easy was it? How customers answer this question explains one-third of their willingness to buy again, increase their business with the company, or rave about it to others. The Customer Effort Score is 12% more predictive of customer loyalty than customer satisfaction.

We often say, “I don’t have time for that today.” But the reality is, “I choose not to give time to that item.” We have to reframe our thinking. How we spend our time is an investment, it is up to us to decide where we put our money. Instead of bemoaning that there are never enough hours in the day, look inward at how you are using the hours you do have. It is self-management, not time-management, that truly maximizes our time

Time management is a myth.

Doing more of everything is not the answer. It is about doing more of the right things. Look at your calendar and surgically dissect the difference between what you could do and the three to four things you must do—the three to four activities that put you on the path to where you want to go. Saying yes to a few great things means saying no to a lot of good things.We are all bound by the same 24 hours in the day. In order to make the most of them, the goal is not to fill every waking moment with work, but rather to be more purposeful and intentional with the time we do spend.

Do more of the right things.

Most of us underestimate what we can do in a year but overestimate what we can do in an hour. We want to be able to say “I can get it done tomorrow”—but we have to be realistic about what is possible.If we constantly give ourselves impossible deadlines, we will feel perpetually behind and frustrated.Give yourself a long enough runway to gain the speed required to take off. As a result, you will be more reliable and less stressed in your life because you are not stuck in a never-ending game of catch-up — you have allocated the proper amount of time for each item and can complete each task.

It's worth asking yourself these questions: What are my short, medium and long term goals? - Can they be implemented? Are we doable? To understand whether they are doable or not: - What is my income? (1/6/12 months) - What is my expense? (1/6/12 months) - What property do I own? - Guess what might happen in the coming months/years? - What atypical/one-time expenses might occur? - Are there situations in which your income will increase or decrease? Develop a plan to achieve the goal.

For example, a gym membership for 8 visits costs $50 per month. A single visit is $10. Becoming a good networker

Networking has a bad connotation because of people who build relationships just to exploit them. The key to successful networking is to add value to help others to succeed:

<li>Don’t keep score. Contribute generously to others and be willing to ask for others’ help. Adopt the philosophy that everyone has the potential to help and be helped.</li>
<li>Crystallize your mission and strategy. It’s always easier to achieve something with a proper goal and strategy. </li>
<li>Have the courage to ask. To build a network, you must be audacious enough to put yourself out there and risk rejection.</li>

Networking: developing the right mindset

“Relationships are all there is. Everything in the universe only exists because it is in relationship to everything else. Nothing exists in isolation. We have to stop pretending we are individuals that can go it alone.

If you build a basis of understanding and trust with someone, you can sure count on their help when you eventually face a problem you can’t solve alone. Nobody likes a leech, who only comes to you when they need your help. Everyone wants to feel respected and valued.

Build your network long before you need it

<li>Approaching new contacts: Learn how to warm up cold leads in advance (do not make cold calls) and manage gatekeepers artfully.</li>

<li>Follow up consistently.</li>
<li>Master the art of small talk.</li>
<li>Your goal for conferences should be to meet like-minded people who can advance your mission.</li>
<li>Expand your social circle. Learn how to connect with the super-connectors and link your circle with someone else’s.</li>
</ul>

Develop the required networking skills

Super-connectors are people who know lots of people. They are known for having hundreds or thousands of contacts and their contacts often come from different walks of life.If you are not a super-connector yourself, you should try to build up a good relationship with one. You can benefit strongly from knowing such a person.
