Your user has a total field of view, but your design needs to fit reasonably within their comfortable cone of standard vision.

How to start designing for AR/VR

Are we really only a moment away from "The Singularity," a technological epoch that will usher in a new era in human evolution?Futurologists point to the exponential rate of technological progress and conclude that we are rapidly approaching a revolutionary turning point. Known as "The Singularity," they predict that we will be able to enhance human intelligence and magnify creativity, entering a new evolutionary stage for mankind and a new epoch for the cosmos. There are at least three objections to this view, demonstrating that the Singularity is hardly a foregone conclusion.

A New Era

The Singularity, for Kurzweil, is defined as “a future period during which the pace of technological change will be so rapid, its impact so deep, that human life will be irreversibly transformed.” The idea is that discovery and progress will “explode with unexpected fury.” We often fail to appreciate what “exponential growth” actually means and how rapidly it brings about change. For instance, if we were to double the processing power of a computer every year, within seven of these “doublings,” our computers’ power would have increased 128-fold.

Discovery & Progress 

For some, this Singularity will be a utopia. For others, it will be a Terminator-style nightmare. Kurzweil is certainly of the former. Kurzweil sees the weakness in our human frailty, or what he calls “1.0 biological bodies.” Yes, we have Rembrandt, Newton, and Saint-Saëns, but it is also true that “much human thought is derivative, petty, and circumscribed.” Which is why the Singularity cannot come fast enough. It is time to ditch these lumbering flesh-sacs of violent barbarity.

Birth Of Meta

Google Cardboard might be the most successful VR project in history. In 2014, what was then the world's largest tech firm asked millions of people to strap their smartphone to their face with a piece of cardboard. Google says it shipped "tens of millions" of foldable headsets and Google Cardboard <a href="https://arvr.google.com/cardboard/apps/">apps </a>were downloaded over 160 million times. It wasn't the highest-resolution, or high-tech, experience but the strategy helped introduce millions of <a href="https://arvredtech.com/blogs/news/10-ideas-google-cardboard-vr-in-the-classroom">students </a>and <a href="https://developers.google.com/cardboard/develop">aspiring developers </a>to virtual reality.

The iPhone maker released <a href="https://www.techrepublic.com/article/apples-arkit-everything-the-pros-need-to-know/">ARKit </a>, the developer framework for creating augmented reality applications for Apple devices, with iOS 11 in 2017. According to the tech website <a href="https://www.theinformation.com/articles/apple-eyes-2022-release-for-ar-headset-2023-for-glasses">The Information </a>, Apple held a 1000-person meeting in 2019 to discuss AR on the iPhone and two potential future products, the <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-06-19/apple-team-working-on-vr-and-ar-headset-and-ar-glasses?sref=ExbtjcSG">N421 smart glasses and N301 VR headset </a>. This was one of the earliest use of the term. Retro-futurism has been an active theme for artistic creation and products. A fingerprint should not be considered a secure alternative to a strong password. Doing so leaves your information — and, potentially, your cryptoassets — vulnerable to even the most unsophisticated of attackers. It should be clear by now that, despite being unique to you, your fingerprint can still be exploited with relative ease. At best, you should only consider using it as second-factor authentication (2FA).

To look at whether time travel is possible we need to distinguish between travelling back and travelling forwards. “From a philosophical point of view, we are constantly time travelling! As we age in our ordinary everyday lives, we are forever travelling into the future'.  “The more interesting idea is being able to access a future everyone else is travelling slowly towards. So you move forward without ageing. And that, in theory, is actually perfectly possible,” he says.

Time TRAVEL- A One Way Ticket?

You may have heard of Cryogenics. This is when someone who’s died is frozen instead of being buried or cremated. The theory is they can be “woken up” in the future when we have the technology to bring them back to life. Or a machine or device could be developed so that some people age more slowly than others around them. This way they’d live longer and see a future beyond the average person’s life span.

Going Forward In Time

Another method might involve travelling in a rocket/spaceship at a very high speed, close to the speed of light. “We can’t establish equality with the speed of light but it is possible, in theory, to travel nearly as fast as the speed of light,” adds Dr Steane. So imagine you’re in a spaceship travelling very fast away from the Earth and you stay in orbit for a year. You'd age at the same rate as if you were still on the Earth, by a year, but when you returned, the earth may have aged hundreds of years. “This is way beyond the technology we have at the moment, but in theory, it's possible.”

So we may one day be able to time travel forwards but what about going back?“Here we hit the philosophical problem that always comes up when you discuss travelling back in time,” says Dr Steane. "Suppose you could go back in time and you accidentally killed your grandparents. Wouldn’t that mean you couldn’t exist either?"So how could you go back in time and see people who’ve died - some of them hundreds of years ago?It's very complex.

Going Back?

However, going back in time goes against the laws of physics- some processes are reversible and some irreversible.Processes like an avalanche can’t unhappen. Likewise, on a smaller scale, if you drop an egg, you can’t unbreak it.A spinning top or a pendulum, is reversible because it keeps moving, repeating itself. Nothing really happens. “Within physics, we’re very aware of these issues. The world is irreversible. And so are our lives. We grow, we age, we die,” says Dr Steane.You can’t reverse the effects of a catastrophic event. And that’s why going back in time is not likely to be possible.

If you’re feeling disappointed that we can’t literally travel back in time then remember there’s nowhere you can’t go in your own mind.Think about history lessons where you’re asked to imagine yourself in someone else’s shoes from long ago or when you look at old photos of fun times. That’s time travel. And what about when you read a book or listen to a story told by a grandparent?You can transport yourself to anywhere back in time and the beauty is you can come back. Since isn’t the greatest fear of time travelling getting stuck in a different time zone and never being able to return?
