Take a moment to see it, identify it and accept it. Affirm that its s ok to feel unexplained anxiousness. Do not brush it under the carpet or insist on a ‘good vibes' approach to how you feel. Instead, change how you view the situation.In a study of college students assigned to give a speech, reappraising (aka reframing) or accepting their nerves was more effective at reducing physical distress than suppressing it. In fact, reappraising was shown to be the most effective technique when it came to moderating those feelings.

Now, here's where the Rule of 3 comes in.Its as simple as naming 3 things. 3-3-3 of certain groups, that can actually ground you in the moment and creating mindfulness that forces you to think of something—anything!—to bring you back to the present moment.Though some would suggest sticking to sight, sound and touch combi; it can be 3 things you're thankful about, colors. It can also be moving 3 different parts of your body.

2.  The Rule Of 3

Allow yourself to worry about only 3 things at any given time. Once you have the 3 you allow yourself to think about, that's it you're maxed out. If you see another thing that will potentially make you worry, you either have to let go of 1 of your initial 3, or you choose not to add the last one to your worries. By thinking about your fears in this straightforward way, it becomes obvious that while some of your problems have actionable solutions and others are completely out of your control, worrying does very little to help either.

We all think that, but it can become much more troublesome when a <a href="https://www.mickmel.com/dont-let-the-hippo-have-the-final-say/">HiPPO</a> (the highest paid person in a meeting) falls into that trap and we all need to follow it.Once a HiPPO thinks they have the right answer, the only way to fight back is with data.

It’s critically important to support business proposals and decisions with data. In the absence of data, you’ll ultimately be forced to do things the boss’s way. Modal Bias ensures that the bosses think that their way is best, unless you can prove otherwise. In a battle of opinions, the HiPPO always wins.

“In God we trust… all others bring data.”

If you can bring data to support your points, your boss should pay attention to that. If your boss repeatedly refuses to see the data, that’s another problem entirely. If you find yourself as the HiPPO in a situation, try to stay open to other ideas and data that may refute what your initial thoughts were.

In today's fast-changing world, companies increasingly need to be proactively resilient to be successful. Gig mindsetters are continuous learners. They manage themselves, take the initiative, focus more on skills and less on roles, use better processes, and are confident to question the status quo. They share what they learn, take ownership of their growth, and have the ability to influence people.

If gig mindsetters continually encounter obstacles, they may look elsewhere for more suitable places to work. Gig mindsetters may encounter difficulties at work because managers may think they are disrespectful or self-centred if they challenge the status quo. However, people with a gig mindset show loyalty to the organisation, not the processes. They are willing to improve things that will benefit the organisation.

How Workers with a “Gig Mindset” Can Help Your Company Thrive

<ul><li>A consequence is the result or direct effect of an action. </li></ul>> Consequences give your child the message that he is capable of taking responsibility for problems and can handle them.<ul><li>Punishment is defined by Merriam-Webster as “suffering, pain, or loss that serves as retribution. </li></ul>> Punishment can cause resentment and rarely teaches a child what you want him to learn. It also can be damaging to your child’s self-esteem and does not facilitate secure attachment.

Consequences versus punishment

<ul><li>It backfires. Punishment is almost always delivered with anger.</li><li>It is temporary. Punishment teaches children to respond out of fear rather than out of a desire to please or do the right thing.</li><li>It reinforces the child’s negative view of self. It creates an expectation by the child and others of additional bad behavior.</li><li>It provokes revenge, makes the child feel angry and resentful.</li><li>It maintains emotional distance. Punishment feeds into their defenses against being close and reinforces a “me against you” mentality.</li></ul>

Why punishment doesn’t work

Three steps:1. Tell your child to sit for a brief time to think about her behaviors and choices.2. When you are ready, not when your child demands, go to your child.3. If your child responds appropriately — with honesty and without blaming others — give praise, a big hug, a warm smile and the assurance that all is forgiven. If your child does not respond appropriately, say, “I guess you need more time to think it over. I’ll be back soon.”

Josh Waitskin is a modern-day polymath. He is an eight-time national chess champion, a two-time world champion in Tai Chi Chuan Push Hands, the first Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, and author of The Art of Learning. Drawing from Josh’s experiences in chess and martial arts, this podcast discusses:<ul><li>learning by focusing on principles and deeply understanding the fundamentals</li><li>how to increase concentration and overcome distraction.</li></ul>

Learning from a modern-day polymath

Josh Waitzkin was the international under-18 chess champion at age 18, only to quit chess at age 22 and pursue Tai-chi Push Hands, the martial application of Tai Chi. He became world champion in this martial art at age 28, and won the title several more times since then. As an accomplished competitor in two fields - one mental, one mostly physical - a book written by him about how he learns is obviously going to contain some interesting ideas. The main themes of what he writes about are two: learning by focusing on principles and deeply understanding the fundamentals; and how to increase concentration and overcome distraction. Interestingly, many of the things that Waitzkin writes in his own personal way square with a lot of findings of cognitive science, many of which we already talked about in other episodes of the podcast. Ideas such as the role of the subconscious, chunking, and expert blindness all appear in his writing, but he usually refers to these by other names. Two quotes from the book didn't make it into the recording, but are worth sharing, and so I will share them below. On losing: "There is something particularly painful about being beaten in a chess game. In the course of a battle, each player puts every ounce of his or her tactical, strategical, emotional, physical, and spiritual being into the struggle. The brain is pushed through terrible trials; we stretch every fibre of our mental capacity; the whole body aches from exhaustion after hours of rapt concentration. In the course of a dynamic chess fight, there will be shifts in momentum, near misses, narrow escapes, innovative creations, and precise refutations. When your position teeters on the brink of disaster, it feels like your life is on the line. When you win, you survive another day. When you lose, it is as if someone has torn out your heart and stepped on it. No exaggeration. Losing is brutal." On competition: "From one perspective the opponent is the enemy.
