Although a company may largely stay remote, they may want employees to come back to the office a few times per month. Solution: First, consider if people really need to come back to the office. If you have been working remotely for nearly two years, it might be unnecessary.

Employees from different states may be subject to employment laws and taxes for where they work that can impact your business, so it might be reasonable to give them fair notice and terminate them if they choose not to come back. However, terminating your good employees because you want to change to in-office work will impact the morale of your remaining employees.

Natural leaders are hard to come by. Almost half of companies surveyed by Workplace Trends said “leadership” is the hardest skill to find in employees. Only 36 percent of employees consider “leadership” a strength in their organization.The implications are clear. We need to nurture and develop young, engaged leaders to fill roles in the future. Only four in 10 managers strongly agree with the statement, “This year, I have had opportunities at work to learn and grow,” in Gallup’s survey.The perception of limited opportunities is a big factor in disengagement. Show them how what they do is more than just a job -- it’s a contribution to a greater good.

How To Fix Meetings: The “GLAD” Rule

[G]ive them what they need to know, not everything you know. We’re often tempted to demonstrate our knowledge or expertise by heaping on a wealth of information. But that just dilutes the main argument. Instead, start by asking: What does my audience need/want to know? Stick to that.

[L]ead with “you.” Believe it or not, your presentation is not about you - it’s about your captive audience. So give them what they want. Talk about their needs and pain points. Be clear about solutions that affect them. And use “you” language to underscore this effort.

[A]ct, and push for [A]ction. Be performative - but only as far as it supports your main point. While numbers vary, experts have noted that 60-80% of communication comes from body language, so leverage that with gestures that emphasize your key point. Don't flail, though - that’s merely distracting. Also, be sure you close your presentation with a call to action. What can your audience do now that they have this new information?

The GLAD Rule - A

[D]eliver details in the middle, the thesis at the beginning and end. If you start with the nitty-gritty, you’ll lose your audience. Grab your audience with a hook (like a story or a compelling statistic), then share your main thesis. What is your point and why does it matter? After this, you can add in supporting details. Then, close with a memorable punch - give your audience the thesis one more time, packaged slightly differently so it doesn't sound like your parroting yourself.

The GLAD Rule - D

This approach can be used in general conversation, too - not just in formal presentations.The crux of it is keeping it simple, compelling, and audience-focused. Why would they want to listen? What will they get out of it? If you make the the case clear and provide an attractive benefit to action, you'll got them hooked.

The GLAD Rule Works For Conversation Too

If you're worried about presenting in front of people, DiResta has a few quick pointers that are easy to remember:<ul><li>Instead of looking at a sweeping sea of people, focus your attention on one person in the audience for 10 seconds, then switch to another person. This makes your presentation feel more like a 1:1 conversation.</li><li>Don't let the “um” derail you. Take pauses between points - even between sentences, if you need them. The silence is far less uncomfortable to the audience than it seems to you and gives you a chance to breathe and collect your thoughts for the rest of your presentation.</li></ul>

3. What do you need from me to do your best work?

The best managers let workers know that their opinions count by promoting open dialogue and providing honest feedback on employees’ opinions and suggestions, supporting good ideas and addressing unfeasible ones. By asking individual team members what they feel the company could be doing better, you’re validating that their thoughts matter.You might also ask things like, “Are you satisfied with our current work from home/hybrid policy? If not, what do you think needs to change? How satisfied are you with the tools you use to communicate with your colleagues when working remotely?”

4. What do you feel we as a Company need to do? 

To determine whether your employees are focusing on their strengths, you might also ask, “What is the best part of your job? Which of your talents are you not using in your current role? What part of your job would you eliminate if you could?”

5. Do you have the opportunity to do what you do best every day?

<ul><li>How would you like to grow within this organization?</li><li>Do you feel a sense of purpose in your job?</li><li>What do you need from me to do your best work?</li><li>What are we currently not doing as a company that you feel we should do?</li><li>Do you have the opportunity to do what you do best every day?</li></ul>

When managers make checking in with these five questions a regular part of how they interact with their employees, it helps ensure that people feel seen and valued. And when managers help individuals on their teams feel that way, they’re more likely to be rewarded by employees who become advocates for the department and organization, no matter how long they stay.

Rewrite the script on the traditional update meeting by focusing the first 10­­-15 minutes on personal talk. Ask broad, exploratory questions such as, “How are you?” and don’t let “fine” be the answer. “Tell me more about that…” is a great follow-up that I often use to get people to elaborate without leading them or making them feel uncomfortable. And most importantly, open up and share about yourself.

Embrace change and co-create a solution with your employees. Take the time to learn what they want. Help them understand your own concerns. Share if you are worried about lack of team cohesion, or collaboration, or finding the next brilliant idea. If you have a lease hanging over your head, perhaps they can help figure out the solution.
