One-sided relationships, also known as ‘parasocial relationships’, are blossoming distancing and national Covid-19 lockdowns. A global study of more than 15,000 people in 25 countries from security firm Kaspersky finds that just under half (47%) of social media users believe the influencers they follow provide them with ‘an escape from reality’. More than one in five (21%) believes they ‘could be friends’with influencers they follow and around the same proportion (22%) have gone as far as sending a private message to an influencer.

The Magnitude Of One-Sided Relationships 

Despite the largely virtual nature of these relationships, many users have sought out direct contact with the influencers they follow, mostly via commenting on their posts (37%) or reacting to their posts or stories (37%).More than a third (34%) of social media users have even met some of the influencers that they follow in real life, with the figure rising to 57% in the US.

The Spillover Of Virtual Relationships

During successive global lockdowns, many of us have spent long periods at home and are turning to virtual companions to replace our lost social lives. This type of one-sided relationship has a strong pull over many lives. More than seven in ten (71%) say that they learn from the influencers they follow in areas such as health, hobbies, style and news. Nearly a quarter (23%) say they are ‘dependent’ on influencer content and one in ten (10%) even say they feel a sense of absence if they do not engage with influencers.

The Invasiveness And Pervasiveness Of Parasocial Relationships

However, social media has been important for many people during the pandemic, with nearly six in ten (59%) worldwide saying social media has provided a vital connection for them during the pandemic. This figure was highest among younger people aged 18-34 (71%), who rely on social media for connectivity. People in Vietnam (94%) and South Africa (79%) are the most likely to say social media is a vital connection for them, although a third of people worldwide (33%) say they have become less tolerant to people on social media during the pandemic.

The Pandemic Effect: People Changed Over To The Opposite Camp

Although more than half (56%) of people have been on active on social media for more than a decade, many of us are still figuring out how to balance the positives of social media with the negatives. Now, we’ve moved into a new era where virtual relationships are becoming the norm. These one-sided relationships can often lead to oversharing on social media, as people look to develop these relationships. However, this can lead to a huge range of negative and unforeseen consequences – hacking and phishing attempts, doxing and bullying, online shaming – the list goes on.

Polarization and conflict seem to be everywhere these days, and the workplace is no exception. When you spend a great deal of time with colleagues and managers, chances are that some conflicts are going to arise. Whether it’s disagreement on the best course of action to solve a thorny project issue, or a bigger-picture conflict over the direction of the company, finding common ground can be a challenge.

Finding Common Ground Can Be A Challenge

A 2019 report from online education company Udemy found that <a href="https://research.udemy.com/research_report/top-10-tech-and-soft-skills-trending-in-2019/">the No. 1 soft skill workers need is conflict management skills </a>. The report says that we spend about 2.8 hours per week resolving conflicts, so we’d better be good at doing so.If you’re at an impasse with a colleague, there are a few ways to approach finding common ground. Try following these steps:

We Spend Quite Some Time Resolving Conflicts

One of the first questions you must ask yourself in trying to get to a place of agreement is what’s standing in your way, says <a href="https://garriyshteynberg.com/">Garriy Shteynberg </a>, PhD, an associate professor of social psychology at the University of Tennessee. Is there <a href="https://www.fastcompany.com/3032706/what-to-do-when-everyone-at-work-is-out-for-themselves">some hidden agenda </a>or reason that the other party would not want to compromise or try to get to a place of agreement?

1. Assess the obstacles

“There are cases in which people are motivated to disagree,” he says. “It’s not like you’re looking for common ground with a person that believes something opposite of you. Many times, what you really want is to cement your part as an identity. And that requires disagreement, actually not agreeing.”If those types of dynamics exist, you may find yourself routinely in conflict, and it may be more difficult to find shared values and agreement. If that’s the case, you may need more third-party intervention or ground rules for engaging with the other person.

Finding areas of agreement is a <a href="https://www.fastcompany.com/3065533/how-to-negotiate-when-youre-at-a-disadvantage">form of negotiation </a>, Weinberg says. So, it’s helpful to understand what you want the outcome to be. “‘Actually, what are my top and bottom lines? What are my walk-away points? What are my alternatives?’ Start to think creatively about not just, ‘How do I get my way?’ but, ‘How can I create something good out of this situation?'” she says. This kind of scenario exploration is often overlooked by people in conflict, she adds.

2. Know your top and bottom lines

When you’re working toward consensus, it’s best to be calm. So, if you’re upset or irritated by a disagreement or comment, take some time to cool off, says Gina M. Weatherup, founder of <a href="https://www.chantillymediationandfacilitation.com/">Chantilly Mediation and Facilitation</a>, a workplace conflict resolution firm.When you’re planning a time to discuss the matter, to the best of your ability, allow enough time so the meeting isn’t hurried. If possible, choose a neutral location or opt for a change of scenery, like a coffee shop, or even a conference room, rather than someone’s office.

3. Choose the right time and place

Preconceived notions can be the enemy of progress when people are attempting to find common ground, says Jaime-Alexis Fowler, founder and executive director of <a href="https://www.empowerwork.org/">Empower Work </a>, a firm that provides counseling and support for workplace issues. Work on shedding what you think you know and become curious about the other person’s beliefs, values, and other motivating factors. “When we’re holding onto that perspective really strongly, we often forget to ask questions or get curious about why someone else also feels strongly,” she says.

4. Get Curious

Weinstein agrees and suggests putting yourself in the other person’s shoes . Ask each party in the disagreement what they really want, and try to listen to what they say. But also watch for visual cues or clues about what they may not be sharing. “What I say I might want to begin with may not be actually what I want. It may just be a way of showing you that I’m strong,” she says. Sometimes, people just want to feel empowered, heard, or valued.

Be Watchful For The Things That Are Said Without Being Said

People typically have 3 types of disagreements, Shteynberg says. One is a disagreement on values, and another is a disagreement about what is good. Increasingly, the third is a disagreement on basic facts. It’s important to know the common ground you’re searching for first. Are you trying to align your values in the decision? Are you in disagreement about the actions that will create the best or most successful result? Are you even in agreement on the underlying facts in the first place?

5. Determine The Type Of Disagreement

As you ask more questions and have discussions, the type of disagreement may be clearer. For example, if you’re arguing that the best way to increase profits is to buy cheaper materials, but one of your colleague’s primary values is providing the best possible quality, you’ll likely have a different discussion than if your colleague doesn’t believe that profit margins need to be increased at all.

If you continue to have trouble finding common ground, you may need to bring in a third party to help you navigate the situation, Weinberg says. Having an objective party in the room can help you defuse tension, get your points across, and identify areas of agreement.“Mediators are kind of sorting boxes with a sorting box and will help you put the right thing in the right compartment so that you can then address it and prioritize it,” she says.

3 Lessons From ‘The Pursuit Of Happiness’ That Everyone Should Know

Sometimes the most meaningful conversations come at surprising times: with someone you meet on a train and never see again, with a friend of a friend who you’ve only just met. Conversely, conversations with our closest friends and family can often be difficult, and we sometimes fail to share our deepest thoughts and feelings with those we love the most.

The Art of Conversation

A <a href="https://psycnet.apa.org/record/2021-88608-001">new paper</a>, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, finds that we seriously benefit from these deep conversations with strangers. But, despite this, we sometimes remain reluctant to engage in them, overestimating their awkwardness and underplaying their advantages even when we enjoy them more.

With Strangers

In the first study, participants read that they would be randomly paired with another person, who they would discuss several questions with. Topics included things in life they felt grateful about and times they had cried in front of another person. They then estimated how much they would be interested in the other person and how interested the other would be in them, how awkward they would feel during the conversation, and how strong a bond they would feel towards them. After having the conversation, they rated their actual experience of the conversation using these same metrics.

Topics of Conversation

The results showed that participants had underestimated how interested they would be in the other person — and how interested that person was in them. They also underestimated how connected they would feel with their partner, and overestimated how awkward the conversation would be.

Connection

A second study replicated the first — only this time, half of the pairs of participants had shallow conversations about TV, lifestyles, and haircuts while half responded to the meaningful questions. Again, participants overestimated how awkward the conversation would be and underestimated how connected they would feel. Those who answered deep questions overestimated the awkwardness significantly more than those who had shallow conversations — and ultimately felt more connected than pairings in the shallow condition.

Deep Questions

A follow-up study, in which participants picked their own deep questions to discuss, replicated these findings.In a fourth study, participants reported how much they thought they would care about their partner and vice versa before speaking to them on either shallow or deep topics. Participants expected to care more about their own responses than their partner would, particularly in the deep condition, though this wasn’t the case: across both conditions, conversational partners cared more about answers to both shallow and deep questions than was anticipated.

Importance of Responses

In a later study, participants engaged in both shallow and deep conversations, reporting their expectations and responses as in previous studies. And despite expecting to prefer the shallow conversation to the deep one, participants actually preferred the deep one, again significantly underestimating how much they would enjoy it. Participants were also better at anticipating how conversations with loved ones would go versus strangers, suggesting we “miscalibrate” how much people we don’t know are interested in our lives.

Over the course of seven studies, the results demonstrated that people enjoy deep conversations despite not expecting to. Deep conversations made participants feel more connected to their conversational partners, and were significantly less awkward than anticipated.

This could prevent us from having conversations with all kinds of benefits — because we expect deep conversations with strangers to be painful, and because we expect strangers not to care, we may be avoiding them altogether. But in fact, this study suggests that we care deeply about one another. Remembering this fact, particularly after a year and a half where many of us have been physically alienated from one another, could ultimately lead to better, or at least unexpected, conversations.

Notice that moment of internal resistance. It could come as irritation, impatience, or some other internal feeling of: Hey, I don’t like that.

Step 1: I Don’t Like It

The next step is to tune into that internal resistance and get curious. Ask yourself: What’s happening here? Why am I upset? And, most importantly: What do I want to be different?

Step 2: What Do I Want?

It’s OK to feel upset inside, but if you charge at them with accusations and hostility, the most natural reaction in the world is going to be defensiveness and fighting back. Instead, you can simply point out what you noticed to enter the conversation. The purpose is to bring up the challenging topic directly in a curious and neutral way. Using the phrase “I notice” removes an accusatory tone and allows the other person to be more receptive.

Step 3: I Noticed…

As you are exploring the situation with the other person, slow down and pay attention. As you listen, reflect on what you are hearing to make sure you understand it clearly.

Step 4: Reflect

It's essential to share the impact of their behavior on you, and your reactions. Tell the other person what happens inside of you when they do X, Y, or Z. Just like with the previous steps, avoid using blaming language that makes the other person bad or wrong.

Step 5: Impact

Once you’ve stated the impact, you then move on to sharing what you actually want. Since you discovered this in Step 2, it will be a breeze to simply share it out loud.

Step 6: Desire

After stating what you want, follow up with questions to see if that works for them. This fully engages them in deciding a solution so they will take ownership and feel inspired to follow the new plan.

W hen did you feel so lonely last time? Have you asked Why? Did you feel so.. if no! Ask yourself why? If, Yes then Good! You are not the only one who is feeling lonely or lonely. Everyone feels that way from time to time, from breaking up to losing someone through death. And sometimes, it is also ok! To have loneliness, thoughts. It only gets worse when you have it for too long.

Our biggest problem that is making us feel lonely is the Internet and Covid 19. The Internet made us more isolated than ever and the Japanese have their own term called <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFgWy2ifX5s">Hikikomori </a> . Where one decides to isolate themselves completely from the world and it is a serious issue there.

More you stay! connect with the people who we don't know virtually, more you feel lonely. We are happy and more alive when we meet someone physically than virtually we can be friends with anyone virtually. But, it lacks the real connection that we could have through face-to-face interaction.

1. Accept this, when you feel, your lonely, you will feel it :-  You won't feel until you feel so that means I won't feel lonely if I don't. You are feeling lonely because you think you are that is why? You are feeling. My dad is no more and it totally depends on me to feel good or bad.  You can still, feel lonely even when you're with someone you love the most. The main thing is I don't feel it in the first place and that is why? I never feel lonely. Because once you start the circle will continue as a never-ending process.

2. Appreciate this life you have :- We often think happiness exists outside and that is not true. Happiness is created by your thoughts, not the things you have. When you appreciate the things you have you love yourself more and once you love yourself more you feel more alive and peaceful. You may have everything you need still you will empty. So, start appreciating the things you have.

3. Loneliness and Depression are interconnected :- Loneliness and Depression are two sides of a coin. If, one starts another starts too, the point is to feel alive each and be grateful for the things we have. When we stay alone we learn more about ourselves as I say it  "Being alone is not a curse, by being alone you get a chance to know yourself better " let this loneliness feeling be your guiding light towards new you not towards self-destruction of your own life.

5.  What loneliness teach you? :-  It taught me many things in my life. I feel happier alone than with someone it makes you love yourself even more. Accepting that you can still be happy being alone is nothing wrong. Every great human that lived, was the lonely person they felt being more alone gave them the opportunity to come up with a better idea than being in a crowd.
