How To Say 'No'

1. Just Say it.Just come out and say it. Beating around the bush or offering weak excuses will only give the other person a chance to insist. It will be tempting to follow up your no with excuses when you're uncomfortable,but resist the urge. You may only give a brief explanation if you feel you need to let the other person know. 2. Be polite but assertiveUse an approach that's polite but puts you in chargeYou can say, "I'm sorry I can't right now but I'll let you know when and if I can." By changing the dynamic you're telling people that only you can decide if and when it will happen.

So How Do You effectively say  'No'

3. Be wary of other people's tactics to get you to say 'yes'.Many people and organizations use manipulation techniques, knowingly or unknowingly: insurance, cable subscriptions etc4. Take the time to evaluate and understand your role in the relationship. When you truly understand the dynamic and your role, you won't feel as worried about the consequences and you would be able to find the best way to say no.

5. Put the question back on the person asking.This is very effective in a work situation. When a supervisor asks you to take on more than you can handle. You can say, "I'm happy to do task X, Y, and Z; however, I would need 3 weeks, rather than 2 to do a good job. How would you like me to prioritize them?"6. Do yourself a favor. Be firm and know their true colorsIf someone can't accept your 'no', take a hint and know that that person is probably not a true friend or doesn't respect you enough that they would put their needs before yours. Stand firm, and don't feel compelled to give in.

7. Identify YOUR own 'YES'When you say 'yes' to something you’re saying 'no' to something elseidentify the things in your life that you value most so when something comes along, you are more likely to honor the things most important to you and say 'no' to everything else. For example: My priorities:<ul><li>Time for myself — sleep, watching tv shows that light me up</li><li>Time with my husband and 2 cats— travels, eating together, doing nothing together</li><li>Getting my business up and running</li></ul>Being a pushover and saying yes to whatever other people ask me to do will leave me saying no to myself and my priorities.

8. Add some good vibes if you still find it hard to say noIt would take time to totally shake off the habit. Instead of saying 'no' right off the bat, it might be a lot easier to lead with good vibes or sandwich the 'no' between 2 good vibes.Leading with good vibes:“I would love to go to the movies with you guys but I can’t tonight.” The good vibes sandwhich(good vibes 1) I would love to go to the party with you guys(The 'No') but I can’t tonight (the 'No')(Good vibes 2) I hope you guys have a fun time, it’s suppose to be a beautiful night!” (good vibes)

The only way to get better at saying no, is to start saying no and to keep doing it. It gets easier over time.

How to Say No, No Explaination

A personality trait is a characteristic pattern of thinking, feeling, and acting that distinguishes one person from another. In natural language, traits often show up as adjectives used to describe one’s personality (e.g., friendly, recalcitrant, creative, bold, petty, loquacious) and imply a degree of stability.

What Is A Personality Trait?

When you tell me that Fred is quiet, I expect that when I meet him he will speak infrequently or softly or both. And I expect that this is driven internally—Fred’s quiet behavior is carried with Fred wherever he goes and manifests itself in a variety of circumstances. But what if Fred doesn’t want to be quiet anymore? What if Fred prefers to roar? Can he make this happen? Should he hire a coach?

Traits Are Mostly Stable And Internally Driven

Over the past half decade or so, psychologists (led frequently by Nathan Hudson) have been considering this question in earnest. Early results are generally promising, and sometimes in surprising ways. First, across major (<a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/big-5-personality-traits">Big Five</a>) trait dimensions—with the interesting exception of <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/openness">Openness to Experience </a>—students who wanted to change a given trait over a 3-month period were generally successful in doing so, at least from their own perspectives (Hudson & Fraley, 2015).

Can We Change A Trait If We Want To?

It turns out it was more effective to have relevant <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/motivation">goals </a>prescribed to some degree rather than to allow people to identify their own change mechanisms. Often, we know the endpoint (“I’d like to be more responsible”), but are less equipped to identify sensible intermediate steps (“I’ll start waking up a half-hour earlier each day to do something productive”).

And How Do We Change It?

As such, change plans were more successful when participants received some instruction to develop small, concrete intervening goals (e.g., organize the app icons on your phone’s home screen [Conscientiousness], smile at someone you don’t know [Agreeableness]). In fact, there was some evidence that without such coaching, the intervention could have effects opposite of the intent: one might come to see oneself as, say, less emotionally stable when the goal was to enhance this characteristic.

The Recipe For Change: Goals And Coaching

Why would this happen? The authors report that people’s desire for change seems to be relatively uniform, and they suggest that vague (and thus perhaps less obtainable) goals (e.g., “be more positive,” “meet new people,” etc.) may create circumstances wherein one is essentially repeatedly faced with their own failure to achieve change, and thus begins to believe that they are even worse off than they initially thought.

Desire For Change Is Vague. Goals Must Be The Opposite. 

For example, someone who would like to be more emotionally stable may develop a goal to relax when they’re stressed. But if each week you’re asked to recall instances when you relaxed in the face of stress and cannot find any, the belief that you’re unable to regulate your anxiety may grow stronger, altering your fundamental self-perception for this trait.

An Example Of Self-Undermining

You might ask yourself whether all this is to be believed, given that all information is coming from one source—the person themselves. Isn’t it possible that people say they want to change, then say they do different things, then say they’ve changed? Sure. And future studies employing peer reports of personality and <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/habit-formation">behavioral change </a>would certainly bolster these findings.

But Can You Really Truly Change?

That said, there are some reasons to believe that these changes aren’t all in our heads. For instance, in a more recent study, Hudson (2021) asked people to identify change goals for a specific trait but subsequently randomly assigned people to different change protocols. For example, I may have stated that I want to become more conscientious, but I received an intervention aimed at increasing my emotional stability. It turns out that changes occurred in correspondence with the intervention, even without the explicit preference for a change in that domain.

Can You Change Any Trait At Will, Regardless Of Preference?

One caveat here is that this manner of intervention was only tested on Emotional Stability and Conscientiousness, and only worked in one case (Conscientiousness). Further, this does not mean that you can induce get-up-and-go in your lazy cousin through sheer force of your own will, but it might mean that presenting people with challenges that are consistent in nature over time might help them change, even without their desire for that specific change.

But: Response To Challenge Is Not Equal To Intentional Change

Essentially, there are two competing accounts of how trait change occurs in individuals. The Sociogenomic account posits that small changes in behaviors or emotional states accumulate in ways that directly lead to changes in personality and are mediated biologically—simply doing things, by choice or by external force, changes the way we interact with the world in ways that don’t require consideration of self-perception as part of the process.

It Seems That Some Traits Change Rather Unknowingly

The Neo-Socioanalytic account suggests that conscious attempts to change self-perceptions work not only to create the molecular state changes but also that these motivations to change affect self-perceptions or identity, which in turn affect personality. The former account would be a tidy way to explain that Conscientiousness seems to be changed without the person’s knowledge or investment, but the latter account would be supported by successful changes to Emotional Stability only occurring when the individual has willfully chosen to change and is participating faithfully in the process.

And Some Traits Change Only Too Willfully 

Regardless of the mechanism, there seems to be good news for you if changing an aspect of your personality is on your list. Obviously, some traits will be easier to change than others, and it’s important to note that these changes aren’t dramatic (our quiet friend Fred is unlikely to actually roar), nor are we sure that they would persist if and when your intervention lapses. But in three months, you could be more <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/extroversion">extraverted </a>or more conscientious than you are today, provided you set clear, consistent, relevant subgoals.

So, Is The News Good Or Bad?

Have you considered changing your personality? There are ways, if you have the will (and sometimes even if you don't). But is it really as simple as “where there’s a will there’s a way”?

Wills and Ways: Changing Our Personality

Language is generative, and the way we talk about our meetings comes to define what happens in those meetings.Even at a time when so much is beyond our control, we remain in control of our own speech patterns. And so, as leaders and employees continue to rethink what the modern workplace should look like, including how we gather, perhaps it’s an opportune moment to banish certain phrases from the “meeting-speak” lexicon.Here are some of the responses that resonated the most.

Banish Certain Phrases

Often among the first words uttered by an online meeting host, this practice dishonors the time of those who joined on time and does nothing to establish a culture of punctuality for meetings. What the author recommends:Ask everyone to write down their intention or objective for the meeting. This isn’t something that will be shared publicly, but the practice of thinking about one’s objectives before a meeting begins can be grounding.

We’re going to wait five minutes for everyone to join.

To be sure, these words quickly signal that a speaker needs to click the unmute button. But the phrase — often uttered by multiple people at once — has become notoriously grating. It also makes the person on the receiving end of the comment feel silly.What the author recommends:A colleague of mine suggests the gentler, more affirming, “If you’re speaking, I can’t hear you.” Instead of making the silent speaker feel silly, this reframing shows them that you truly want to hear what it is they have to say.

You’re on mute.

Without a clear, quick mention of how and when this “offline” conversation will take place, this is a jargony way to dismiss someone’s idea and put them off indefinitely. What the author recommends:Why not go with something like this: “That’s an important topic that’s beyond the scope of this meeting. I’ll email you when we wrap up.”

Let’s take this offline.

This is not to say that the author is opposed to meetings that end early. But if they’re well-structured, well-run, and surprisingly concise, we should celebrate the fruits of our collaboration and look forward to our next gathering.What the author recommends: Consider saying, “Wow. Because everyone was so productive, we’re done 10 minutes early. Thank you so much for your presence and participation. Have a great day.” This simple rephrasing has the power to reframe your work.

A key to understanding how well you know a subject is how easily you’re able to explain it to others. As I shared last year in “<a href="https://www.mickmel.com/explain-it-to-me-like-im-five/">Explain it to me like I’m five</a>“, being able to distill a complex subject down is a great skill to develop.

If you can’t describe it, you don’t know it well enough

“If you can’t describe what you are doing as a process, you don’t know what you’re doing.”

“Whoever best describes the problem is the one most likely to solve it.”

<ol><li>It helps you to better understand what you’re actually doing. Taking the time to write out a process is often very beneficial for the one doing it.</li><li>Long-term, it makes it easier for others to help with your work. At the time of this writing, our project manager at GreenMellen is out on maternity leave, but the processes that we have in place for her work allow us to continue on relatively seamlessly (though we’re very excited to have her back soon!).</li></ol>

If you can't describe it, you don't know it well enough

Regret is a very real reaction to a disappointing event in your life, a choice you made that can’t be changed, something you said that you can’t take back. It’s one of those feelings you can’t seem to shake, a heavy and intrusive negative emotion that can last for minutes, days, years <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-mindful-self-express/201205/the-psychology-regret">or even a lifetime </a>. Imaging studies reveal that feelings of regret show <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/nn1514">increased activity </a> in an area of the brain called the medial orbitofrontal cortex.

Regret Is Very Real

Dealing with regret is even more difficult because of the other negative emotions connected to it: remorse, sorrow and helplessness. Regret can increase our stress, <a href="https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/03/110301111503.htm">negatively affect physical health </a> and throw off the balance of hormone and immune systems. Regret is not only unpleasant. It is unhealthy.

Dealing With Regret 

As with other negative emotions, it doesn’t work to avoid, deny or try to squash regret. In the long run, these tactics only increase negative feelings and prolong the time you suffer with them. Rather than stay stuck, people can manage these emotions in four steps: First, accept the fact that you are feeling them; determine why you are feeling them; allow yourself to learn from them; and finally, <a href="https://doi.org/10.1080/02699931.2015.1078292">release them and move forward </a>.

This method of noticing and then restructuring your thoughts is sometimes called <a href="https://www.routledge.com/Living-Mindfully-Across-the-Lifespan-An-Intergenerational-Guide/Penberthy-Penberthy/p/book/9780367370152">cognitive reappraisal </a>. Seeing the situation in a different way may help reduce regret and help you <a href="https://adaa.org/learn-from-us/from-the-experts/blog-posts/consumer/how-handle-regret">make future decisions </a>.

<a href="https://doi.org/10.1080/02699931.2015.1078292">Forgiving yourself </a> for actions taken or not taken is a powerful step toward overcoming regret. This has been formalized into a commonly used cognitive psychological model called <a href="https://www.evworthington-forgiveness.com/reach-forgiveness">REACH </a>, which asks people to recall the hurt (face it), empathize (be kind and compassionate), altruistically offer forgiveness (to oneself), commit publicly (share it) and then hold on to that forgiveness and <a href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.00671">stay true to the decision </a>. Research shows that six hours of work with a trained professional using this model <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/jclp.22073">can have a positive impact </a>.

What if god helped you.

Kapila was a Vedic sage who lived around the 6th century BCE and is considered a founder of Samkhya, the oldest of the six orthodox schools of Indian philosophy, or darshans. His name comes from the Sanskrit meaning “reddish brown” and is translated as “the red one.” Kapila is considered an incarnation of Vishnu who came to earth to restore spiritual order. He is also known for teaching Bhakti yoga, the spiritual path of liberation or enlightenment.

Kapila is a given name of different individuals in ancient and medieval Indian texts, of which the most well-known is the founder of the Samkhya school of Hindu philosophy. Kapila of Samkhya fame is considered a Vedic sage, estimated to have lived in the 6th-century BCE, or the 7th-century BCE.Rishi Kapila is credited with authoring the influential Samkhya-sutra, in which aphoristic sutras present the dualistic philosophy of Samkhya. Kapila's influence on Buddha and Buddhism have long been the subject of scholarly studies.

Biography

Many historic personalities in Hinduism and Jainism, mythical figures, pilgrimage sites in Indian religion, as well as an ancient variety of cow went by the name Kapila.Kapila is credited with authoring an influential sutra, called Samkhya-sutra(also called Kapila-sutra),which aphoristically presents the dualistic philosophy of Samkhya.These sutras were explained in another well studied text of Hinduism called the Samkhyakarika. Beyond the Samkhya theories,he appears in many dialogues of Hindu texts, such as in explaining and defending the principle of Ahimsa (non-violence) in the Mahabharata.

Kapila And Ahimsa

The Rigveda X.27.16 – estimated to have been composed between 1500 and 1200 BCE – mentions Kapila (daśānām ekam kapilam ) which the 14th-century Vedic commentator Sayana thought refers to a sage; a view which Chakravarti in 1951 and Larson in 1987 consider unreliable, with Chakravarti suggesting that the word refers to one of the Maruts, while Larson and Bhattacharya state kapilam in that verse means "tawny" or "reddish-brown"; as was also translated by Griffith.

In Vedic texts

Kapila is mentioned in chapter VIII of the Uttaradhyayana-sutra , states Larson and Bhattacharya, where a discourse of poetical verses is titled as Kaviliyam , or "Kapila's verses". The name Kapila appears in Jaina texts. For example, in the 12th century Hemacandra's epic poem on Jain elders, Kapila appears as a Brahmin who converted to Jainism during the Nanda Empire era. According to Jnatadharmakatha , Kapila was a contemporary of Krishna and the Vasudeva of Dhatakikhanda . The text further mentions that both of them blew their shankha (counch) together.

Jainism

Buddhists literature, such as the Jataka tales, state the Buddha was Kapila in one of his previous lives.Scholars have long compared and associated the teachings of Kapila and Buddha. Mahabharata

who are conversant with all paths and endued with wisdom, say that there are five faults, O puissant one, in the human body. They are Desire and Wrath and Fear and Sleep and Breath. These faults are seen in the bodies of all embodied creatures. Those that are endued with wisdom cut the root of wrath with the aid of Forgiveness. Desire is cut off by casting off all purposes. By cultivation of the quality of Goodness (Sattwa) sleep is conquered, and Fear is conquered by cultivating Heedfulness.Breath is conquered by abstemiousness of diet. (Book 12: Santi Parva: Part III, Section CCCII.)

Bhagavata Purana

Continued above - one's mind becomes purified. In that pure state he transcends the stage of so-called material happiness and distress." Kapila, the founder of Samkhya, has been a highly revered sage in various schools of Hindu philosophy. Gaudapada (~500 CE), a Advaita Vedanta scholar, in his Bhasya called Kapila as one of the seven great sages along with Sanaka, Sananda, Sanatana, Asuri, Vodhu and Pancasikha. Vyasa, the Yoga scholar, in his Yogasutra-bhasya wrote Kapila to be the "primal wise man, or knower".
