We should think openly and try to comprehend what they are trying to propose from their point of view, and for this initiative, they will feel comfortable and can converse with us more.

Accept Their Thoughts

No one likes a person radiating a competitive expression or someone asserting dominance.To adapt with the individual, acting like someone who is like a friend, someone who doesn't show dominance towards their friends may help.

Appear as Humble

As personalities vary among us, our maturity varies as well. So, someone younger than us won't appear to be sensible to us sometimes, yet we have to go with the flow and act a lot like them. As for elders, speaking in common terms and within topic assists in giving them the thought of us as someone relevant.Despite off many factors, however, reacting to their feelings with sympathy instead of showing judgemental actions can work for both.

More or less, awkward situations appear as barriers when it comes to communication.In this regard, one may act calm, not freak out, not show fast gestures, and comply with the surroundings.

How to Adapt With People of Any Age Group

Implicit learning refers to the process of acquiring knowledge about the structure of the environment without conscious awareness. Like how we learn to ride the bike. Explicit learning is a conscious operation where the individual makes & tests hypotheses in a search for structure. Like how we learn math.During the Palaeolithic times, knowledge was 100% implicit. There was no abstract thought, patterns were recognised intuitively and expressed in metaphors. Shamanic rituals was how knowledge was passed around. The Axial Revolution will introduce abstract thought & explicit learning.

Creativity is when different parts of your brain connect. It's what happens when we are in a state of flow, during meditation or in psychedelic experiences.Metaphors is how we do that in language. Most of our language is metaphorical. We ask "Do you see what I am saying". We say "Hope this is not hard for you" or "This is the middle of my talk". Most of what we say are metaphors.Metaphorical thought, your ability to make analogies, is a measure of a good problem solver. The smart people make interesting connections.

Is the period after the Bronze Age, when at the same time around the world, the great intellectual, philosophical, & religious systems that came to shape subsequent human society emerged—with the ancient Greek philosophers, Indian gurus (creators of of Hinduism & Buddhism), Persian Zoroastrianism, the Hebrew Prophets, the “Hundred Schools” (Confucianism & Daoism) of ancient China.The phrase originated with the German philosopher Karl Jaspers, who noted that during this period there was a shift—away from more predominantly localized concerns and toward transcendence.

Axial Revolution

Transcendence means “to go beyond.” In the case of the Axial “revolution”, “going beyond” has several meanings:<ul><li>a shift to thinking about the cosmos and the way it works rather than taking for granted that it works</li><li>the rise of second-order thinking about the ways that human beings operate, realising both that we are lying to ourselves and that we can improve ourselves. </li></ul>It's why the transcendent thinkers of the Axial Age: Buddha, Plato etc ... are still relevant today.

Second order thinkers ask themselves the question “And then what?” It is a form of meta-cognition that allows for investigation of our own thinking.It became a thing during the Axial Revolution, when writing allowed us to store our thoughts, reflect on them and communicate with others across time and space.

Accepting an abstract representation of value was a massive shift for the time.</li><li>Money makes people think mathematically. </li></ul>

...is an empowerment and a relaxation....is physiologic experience without acting outWhen healthy anger is starting to be experienced, you don't see anything dramatic. What you do see is a decrease of all muscle tension.

Healthy Anger

Most of people will describe anxiety: tightening of the voice, shallow breathing, muscle tension - signs of anxiety not rage. Anger triggers anxiety because it coexist with positive feelings, with love and the desire for contact. Anger leads to an attacking energy, it threatens attachment.  Aggressive impulses are suppressed because of guilt, and the guilt exist only because of the simultaneous existence of love, of positive feelings.Anger doesn't exist in a vacuum by itself: is incredibly anxiety-provoking and guilt-producing for a person to experience aggressive feelings toward a loved one.

Rage - What do people really experience when they experience it?

The acting-out, the yelling, the screaming and even the hitting serves as a defence against the experience of the anger.  So, we repress the anger. Repression and discharge are two sides of the same coin.

When the Body Says No

During Jeff Bezos's tenure as CEO of Amazon, what was the number one quality he looked for when hiring people? Hard work and past accomplishments certainly mattered. But when the then-Amazon boss spoke at Basecamp he stressed another quality as most important: <a href="https://www.inc.com/jessica-stillman/this-is-number-1-sign-of-high-intelligence-according-to-jeff-bezos.html">intellectual humility </a>.Bezos has "observed that the smartest people are constantly revising their understanding, reconsidering a problem they thought they'd already solved. They're open to new points of view, new information, new ideas, contradictions, and challenges to their own way of thinking”.

Intellectual Humility

To reach your maximum potential you need to be willing to learn and improve, and that necessarily entails <a href="https://www.inc.com/jessica-stillman/the-key-to-learning-more-quickly-admitting-when-youre-wrong.html">admitting you don't already have all the answers</a>. However, it's a well-established fact in psychology that humans in general are actually <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Wobegon#The_Lake_Wobegon_effect">pretty bad at intellectual humility</a>. As Duke University psychology professor <a href="https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/what_does_intellectual_humility_look_like?utm_source=Greater+Good+Science+Center&utm_campaign=106651db6e-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_GG_Newsletter_November_4_2021&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_5ae73e326e-106651db6e-51301103">Mark Leary recently explained on UC Berkeley's Greater Good Science Center </a>, this makes intellectual humility a powerful advantage in reaching your goals in life.

Humans Are Actually Pretty Bad At Intellectual Humility

In the course of this deep dive into the subject, Leary outlines a heap of research on the benefits of intellectual humility. "<a href="https://dukespace.lib.duke.edu/dspace/handle/10161/23967">One of our studies </a>showed that people high in intellectual humility were more attentive to the quality of the evidence in an article about the value of dental flossing, more clearly distinguishing good from bad reasons to floss," he writes.

The Benefits Of High Intellectual Humility

Other studies show the intellectually humble give more careful consideration to evidence that contradicts their views and end up with a better understanding of those they disagree with (which can't hurt when it comes to empathy, persuasion, and <a href="https://www.inc.com/jessica-stillman/trump-wall-shutdown-negotiation-lessons.html">negotiating compromises </a>). They're also better at eliciting creative and varied ideas from others.

"Intellectual humility is also associated with the desire to learn new information. People who are high in intellectual humility score <a href="https://dukespace.lib.duke.edu/dspace/handle/10161/23967">higher in epistemic curiosity </a>, which is the motivation to pursue new knowledge and ideas," Leary adds. "People higher in intellectual humility like to think more than people low in intellectual humility do."

On the flip side, those low in intellectual humility are more likely to get emotional with those who disagree with them and are rated as likable by others. They are less likely to compromise and even less likely to end up in satisfying relationships.

The Benefits (?) Of Low Intellectual Humility

Intellectual humility might not be the most discussed trait, but research shows it's an essential precursor to almost any kind of excellence.

So how can we <a href="https://www.inc.com/jessica-stillman/4-tricks-to-avoid-overconfidence.html">temper our natural human tendency toward overconfidence </a>and nudge ourselves to be a little more humble about the limits of our knowledge? Leary uses logic to try to talk people around to a little more humility."People must see that approaching the world in a more intellectually humble fashion is both rational and beneficial," he writes. "Intellectual humility is rational in the sense that we can't all be right in most of our disagreements, we are often irrationally overconfident, and the evidence on which our beliefs and viewpoints are based is often rather flimsy.”

How And Why To Temper Our Intellectual Pride

Intellectual humility therefore makes sense and is beneficial. And of course, Intellectual pride doesn't make sense and is detrimental. If we are rational beings, we should naturally pursue what’s beneficial. So, why would rational people be as sure of themselves as most of us are?It's a pretty compelling argument for taking a long, hard look at whether you're as open to new information and ideas as you should be. And if it helps you can also remind yourself that this quality will certainly help you get a job with Jeff Bezos too.

Research Agrees With Jeff Bezos That This Is the Most Important Quality for Success

People who wear glasses know that a change in prescription is sometimes required, to allow them to see more clearly.Sometimes, we need to do the same thing mentally: our thoughts and emotions may cloud our vision and judgment. When that’s the case, we need to change our glasses: that is, change our perspective.

The “Changing Your Glasses Technique”

The technique of “changing your glasses” is rooted in principles of cognitive psychology.In the 1950s, psychologist Albert Ellis taught that irrational thinking is the root cause for many emotional problems. For example, irrational beliefs lead to unhealthy emotional consequences, like self-sabotage.

Ben has just lost his job. He’s devastated."What am I going to do now?" he asks.He falls asleep at night, swimming in a sea of negative emotions.In the morning, he wakes up distraught. “This stuff always happen to me,” he thinks. “I have the worst luck.” Ben's negative thoughts feed themselves. They create a raging storm in his head, preventing him from starting his new job search--or doing anything else productive.

An Example:

Rational thinking allows us to feel disappointment and frustration, but to a limited extent. We recognize that changes in circumstances, even big and serious ones, can happen everyday and to everyone, and can even lead to positive results.

Rational Thinking Has Healthy Emotional Consequences

Amy has the exact same fate and initial reaction to Ben.She also wakes up in the morning with a knot in her stomach. But her response is different: She takes control or her thoughts and changes her perspective:“That job was never going to take me anywhere,” she thinks. “I'm sure I can find something better. Better yet, I’ve been wanting to go out on my own for ages. Maybe this is the jumpstart I need.”"Losing this job will be the best thing that's ever happened to me."

Despite facing similar situations, Amy’s reaction is much more beneficial. By exercising emotional intelligence, she’s able to change the way she views her circumstances. This simple perspective shift allows her to get her emotions under control, leading her to also take control of the situation.

Control Of Emotions = Control Of Situation

Write it down. Putting our thoughts in writing - with actual pen and paper, not just typing - can be a powerful way to force ourselves to reckon with our feelings.For example, let’s imagine Ben takes some time to describe his feelings on paper. He may believe that he is truly unlucky and there’s no chance he’ll find another job. But the simple process of writing these thoughts can help him slow down, think, and re-evaluate the validity of those thoughts.

How To Break The Cycle Of Negative Thinking

Talk to someone. As we voice our thoughts and feelings to someone we trust, we may find ourselves re-thinking our opinion as we speak.And even if not, we give that person the chance to give valuable feedback, to put on their “glasses” for a minute. In other words, they help us see the situation through their eyes, which can help us to reassess our own thoughts and feelings.

Fill your mind with positive thoughts.Negative feelings like self-doubt and self-pity can quickly spiral out of control. Focusing on positive thoughts can help us find balance.For example, Ben could make a list of potential positive consequences from losing his job:<ul><li>finding a new job he enjoys more than his previous one</li><li>having time to reconnect with family or friends</li></ul>By focusing on these positive results, Ben can form an approach that’s more optimistic, yet still realistic. It won’t completely eliminate the negative feelings, but it can help keep them in their place.

So, the next time you find your emotions working against you, ask yourself:Do I need to change my glasses?Because a change in perspective can help us see the world in a different light.
